New Castle, Del. - (4/6/2021) – Chestnut Hill College came to bat in the eighth inning of game two, seeking their first taste of victory. Consecutive hits from sophomore second baseman Haley Furlong (Point Pleasant, N.J.), freshman shortstop Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.), junior pitcher Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas), and sophomore left fielder Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) helped deliver it as the Griffins scored three extra-inning runs to earn an 8-5 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory in the second game of today's doubleheader at Wilmington University. The Wildcats won the first game 6-1.
Junior shortstop Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, Pa.) was 4-for-4 in the opener, while senior right fielder Megan Jankiewicz (Clearwater, Fla.) (2-for-2, R, RBI, BB) scored the only Chestnut Hill College (1-11, 1-9) run with her solo shot in the sixth inning. Wilmington University (5-3, 5-3) scored their six runs early with three in both the first and third inning.
In game two, the Wildcats established a 3-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the second inning and an additional tally in the third inning. The Scarlet and Gold cut into the deficit with two runs in the fourth inning. There, Toro led off with a single through the left side and senior centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) singled to right center before a single back through the box from senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas), and a bases-loaded walk to Jankiewicz scored two Griffins, 3-2. Wilmington University got those runs back in the fifth inning, 5-2, but Chestnut Hill College brought all things even with three two-out runs in the sixth inning, 5-5. Jankiewicz, Furlong, Baldwin, and Petroski all recorded hits in the sixth inning, while Toro and Horner both drew run-scoring walks. A scoreless seventh inning precipitated the extra frame, where a lead-off Furlong single was the first in a series of Scarlet and Gold hits. It was followed by a Baldwin single to right, a Reid double down the left field line, 6-5, a wild pitch, 7-5, and a Toro single to left center, 8-5.
Reid earned the win (1-1) for Chestnut Hill College with three innings of scoreless relief. She allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Toro was 3-for-4 with a run and two runs-batted-in (RBI), while three other Griffins recorded at least two hits in the contest.
Chestnut Hill College continues a busy week of CACC competition on Thursday, April 8, when they host Georgian Court University in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
