Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/8/2021) – Chestnut Hill College continued a busy week of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition with today's doubleheader versus Georgian Court University. The Lions took advantage of a sleepy Griffin defense, scoring seven first-inning runs en route to a 15-4, five-inning win in game one. They won the second game as well, this time using a five-run fourth inning and a five-hit shutout from junior Mikayla Gilgert (Queen Creek, Ariz.) to suppress the Griffins, 9-0.
Sophomore Jacqueline King (Fairless Hills, Pa.) entered the opener in the third inning and went 2-for-2 with a run and a run-batted-in (RBI), while limiting the Lions to three runs on five hits in two and two-thirds innings of relief. Junior catcher Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) had two hits in game two (2-for-2), but she was left stranded after a leadoff double in the second inning and a one-out single in the fourth inning.
Georgian Court University (11-1, 5-0) led Chestnut Hill College (1-13, 1-11) by a 13-0 measure after the first four innings of game one. They made it 14-0 in the top of the fifth, before the Scarlet and Gold attempted a late rally with five runs in the bottom of the frame. There, junior Haley Cooper (Hamilton, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk and stole second base before freshman pinch-hitter Macey Matlock (Bristol, Pa.) singled her third and King drove her in, 14-1. A sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.), a Lion error, and a two-run homer from senior centerfielder Devon Horner (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) brought home four more Griffins, but the rally was eventually quieted with a return of sophomore pitcher Samantha Fohrman (Cottage Grove, Minn.), 14-5.
In game two, senior pitcher Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.) (L, 4.0 IP, 1ER, 6H, 3BB) pitched three strong innings before her defense failed her. Georgian Court University took advantage of a pair of Chestnut Hill College errors to score five fourth-inning runs. It increased their 1-0 advantage to a 6-0 lead; a sum that they added to in the fifth inning, 7-0, and seventh inning, 9-0.
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Saturday, April 10, when they visit Caldwell University for a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
