Bloomfield, N.J. - (5/1/2021) – Chestnut Hill College's three-run first-inning was the difference in the second game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Bloomfield College. The Bears scored twice in the bottom of the frame and only matched the Griffins' production the rest of the way in a 7-6 Scarlet and Gold triumph. Bloomfield College won the opener 8-4, using a series of Chestnut Hill College errors to win the game with five runs between the fourth and sixth innings.
Senior third baseman Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas) tripled in pair of Chestnut Hill College (2-24, 2-20) runs during the third inning of the opener. She also singled in the seventh inning. Arredondo was also one of four Griffins to record two hits in the second game. Another was senior left fielder Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.), who led off game two with a home run to left center.
After Petroski's home run, sophomore second baseman Samantha Toro (Brick, N.J.) doubled to left field, advanced to third on a grounder to short, before being the victim of a fielder choice off the bat of junior right fielder Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.). It was O'Byrne who would eventually become the second Scarlet and Gold run of the first inning, crossing the plate on Arredondo's double to left field. The third was Arredondo, who came home on another double to left from sophomore second baseman Emma Peterson (Reading, Pa.), 3-0. Bloomfield College (9-16-1, 9-13) scored twice in the bottom of the frame, 3-2, and only echoed the Griffins in the sixth, 5-4, and seventh innings of a 7-6 Chestnut Hill College win.
Senior Julianna Barry (Northridge, Calif.) earned her first win (1-8) of the season. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four in six innings. Junior Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) earned the save (1) (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R).
The Griffins led through the first three and a half innings of the opener; they outscored the Bears in the first inning, 2-1, and both sides scored twice in the third to put Chestnut Hill College up 4-3. But defense did the Scarlet and Gold in as two errors in the fourth inning and another in the fifth led to five Bloomfield College that decided the 8-4 final.
Chestnut Hill College finishes their regular season schedule tomorrow, Sunday, May 2, when they welcome the University of the Sciences (USciences) to campus for a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
