A dominating fourth quarter defense and some solid shooting led the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team to their biggest win of the season as they upset nationally ranked University of the Sciences 51-41 Tuesday at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins, winners of seven straight games, improve to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. CHC's 13-3 start to the season an 7-0 conference record as program bests since becoming an NCAA member as is their seven game win streak. The Devils fall to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The Griffins held the Devils to their lowest point total in nearly four years. USciences scored 41 points in a 41-32 win over Goldey-Beacom in February 2018. The last time the Devils scored 41 or fewer points in a loss came in January 2016 when Bloomfield College held USciences to just 29 points in a 52-29 win.
Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) and
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) scored ten points apiece to pace the Griffins with Sebold recording a double-double with ten rebounds. The senior guard also added five assists.Â
Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.) added eight points, six rebounds and five blocks. Â
Lindsey Lane (Havertown, Pa.) also had eight points while grabbing five rebounds.
Trailing 38-34 heading into the fourth quarter, the Griffins turned up the defense, holding the Devils to just three free throws over the first 3:02. Meanwhile the Griffins made three of their first four shots to tie the game at 41-41 with 6:14 remaining. Sebold started things off with a three-point basket and Lane gave the Griffins a brief 39-38 lead before USciences made their three free throws to retake the lead 41-39. Chmiel's jumper at the 6:14 mark tied the score at 41-41 and the Chestnut Hill defense did not allow another USciences point the rest of the way as they finished the game on a 10-0 run. The Devils were held without a field goal in the quarter, missing all 11 of their shot attempts, while making six of 11 shots on their end of the court and all four of their free throw attempts.
The Griffins, who trailed by two after the first quarter, took their biggest lead, 29-16 with a 16-1 run midway through the second quarter. The Devils came back with a 7-0 run to close out the quarter with Taylor Hamm (game high 18 points) scoring all seven points to close the gap to 29-23 at the half.
Chestnut Hill again opened up a double-digit lead in the third quarter 33-23 but a 14-0 run by the Devils reversed the scored and gave USciences their biggest lead of the game at 38-33.Â
Kaitlyn Carter's (Philadelphia, Pa.) free throw with 36 seconds left in the quarter broke the run and made the score 38-34, setting the table for the final quarter which saw the Griffins dominate on both ends of the court, outscoring the Devils 17-3 over the final ten minutes of action to earn the win.
Hamm was the only Devils player in double figures with her 18 points. She also had nine rebounds. Chestnut Hill's defense held the Devils' leading scorer Jess Huber (17.1 ppg. entering the contest) to just six points all in the third quarter.
For the game, the Griffins shot 36.7% (18-49) while holding the Devils to just 26.9% shooting (14-52) from the field. Free throw shooting was solid both ways (11-14 USci, 12-13 CHC) and neither team dominated beyond the three-point arc. The Griffins held the edge on the boards, outrebounding the Devils 38-33 and had a season high nine blocks on the evening.
The Chestnut Hill women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday as they host Post University, another regionally ranked squad (#10) at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
