Griffins Hold Off Tigers for Tenth Straight Win

Bri Hewlett recorded the first double-double of her career as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team continued their winning way, extending their winning streak to a program record ten games as they held off a late charge from Holy Family University to defeat the Tigers 68-62 at Sorgenti Arena Tuesday night.

The Griffins remain the only unbeaten team in conference play at 9-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games with the win and improve to 16-3 overall.  The Tigers had their four-game winning streak snapped and fall to 5-6 in league play and 10-10 overall.

Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) scored a career high 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, including four three-point baskets.  The senior forward also pulled down a career high 12 rebounds.  Lindsey Lane  (Havertown, Pa.) and Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) had 12 points apiece to join Hewlett in double figures.  Sebold also dished out a game-high eight assists.  Kaitlyn Carter (Philadelphia, Pa.)  grabbed seven rebounds while Lane added six.

Sebold's 12 points moved her into fourth place on the Griffins' all-time scoring list with 1,133 points, passing Jen Banks' total of 1,126 points scored from 2001-2004.

Two ties and three lead changes highlighted the first quarter as the Griffins came away with a slim 16-15 lead heading into the second where they produced a 12-1 run in the first four minutes to take a double digit lead 28-16.  Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.)  scored four of her six points during the ran which was capped by a Sebold three-ball.  Chestnut Hill closed out the quarter with an 8-2 spurt, highlighted by two Hewlett 'threes' to take a 38-22 lead at halftime.

Holy Family chipped away at the lead in the third quarter, closing within seven, 40-33 on Ava Morrow's (12 points) three-point basket with 3:45 left.  Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) countered with her own three-ball to push the lead back up to ten and the Griffin lead fluctuated between eight and ten points the rest of the period.

Abbey Spratt's  (Doylestown, Pa.) short jumper to open the fourth quarter and another three-ball from Crim pushed the lead back to 13 points 54-41 before the Tigers closed within weight with five straight points.  A 9-2 run by the Griffins followed pushing the lead to 15, 63-48 with 2:11 left.  The Tigers again closed within eight before putting Chestnut Hill on the foul line where they converted five of six free throws in the final minute.  A three-pointer at the buzzer by the Tigers made the final margin six points, 68-62.

Morrow's 12 points paced the Tigers.  Jenn Kokolus had ten rebounds  and Carolyn Prevost dished out four assists.

For the game, the Griffins shot 40.4% (23-57) from the field while the Tigers shot 38.5% (20-52).  Chestnut Hill limited second chance opportunities by the Tigers, holding them to just five offensive rebound, leading to five points while grabbing 14 boards off the offensive glass and scoring 13 second chance points.  In total, the Griffins outrebounded the Tigers 42-27.
