A huge second half run by the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team wiped out a five point deficit and propelled the Griffins to an 80-68 win over host Nyack College Wednesday night at the John J. Jones Athletic and Fitness Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Griffins improve to 6-5 overall and remain undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at 3-0.  Nyack falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Griffins' 3-0 conference start is their best since the 2011-12 season when Chestnut Hill won their first five CACC games of the season.
Four players reached double figures to pace the Chestnut Hill offense.Â
James Rider IV (Baltimore, Md.) and
Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.) scored 18 points apiece. Rider connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field, including a 4-6 effort from three-point range. Pitts was 7-for-13 from the field and made four of five shots from the free throw line.
Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md.) scored 13 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds while
Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) scored all 12 of his points in the second half, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the final 20 minutes. Regan also had a double-double with ten rebounds to go along with his 12 points. Haughton led the team with six assists.
The Warriors led by as many as nine in the first half before the Griffins erased the deficit with a 13-3 run over the final 4:18 of the period to take a 31-30 lead in the final minute. Â
Noah Charles (Columbia, Md.) started things off with a three point bucket and Pitts added a layup following a Charles' steal. Pitts, Haughton, Charles and Rider closed out the run with baskets following a Nyack three-ball from Jordan Rodriguez (team-high 17 points). Nyack retook the lead, 32-31 with a basket in the final seconds of the half.
Rider scored the Griffins first five points of the second half and Regan added his first basket of the game to put the Griffins up 38-35. Nyack countered with a 12-4 run to take a 47-42 lead with 13:10 left when the Griffins started their decisive run. Chestnut Hill went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field over the next 3:16, scoring 14 straight points to take a 56-47 lead at the 9:54 mark. A layup by Nyack's Joel Bailey broke the 14-0 run before the Griffins followed with a 16-4 uprising to complete a massive 30-6 run and take a 72-53 lead with 4:41 remaining. Chestnut Hill was a perfect 13-for-13 from the field over the course of the run which spanned just under nine minutes and saw six different players score at least one basket.   Nyack cut the lead to 15 on two occasions before Regan pushed the margin back to 18 with his sixth and final basket of the half to make the score 79-61. Nyack closed out the game with a 7-1 spurt to make the final score more respectable 80-68.
For the game the Griffins shot 55% (33-60) from the field while holding Nyack to just 41.2% (28-68). Nyack made four more three point baskets (9-5) but the Griffins outscored the Warriors from the free throw line 9-3. Chestnut Hill also out-rebounded the Warriors 40-24.
The Chestnut Hill college Men's Basketball Team will return to action on Saturday, January 8, 2022 when they host Felician College at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.  Â
