Griffins Shut Out Cougars as Team Celebrates Senior Day

It was Senior Day at victory Field #1 in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania as the Chestnut Hill college women's soccer team extended their conference unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 shutout of Caldwell University.

The Griffins improve to 4-1-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games and 7-3-2 overall.  Their seven wins surpasses last season's win total of six and the Griffins are now 4-0-2 in their last six conference games.   The win marked the Griffins' first over the Cougars since the 2010 season.  The Cougars fall to 2-6-4 overall and 1-3-3- in league games.

Prior to the game the Athletic Department recognized four senior players who were playing in their final season as a member of the Griffins' women's soccer team:  Olivia Medeiros, Trinity Simmons, Alexa Murphy and Angel Hines.

The Griffins were aggressive on offense right from the opening kick, outshooting the Cougars 4-1 over the first 20 minutes and took a 1-0 lead on their fifth shot as Lizzie Stokes scored her fourth goal of the season at the 20:07 mark with Medeiros getting the assist on the play.

Chestnut Hill continued to set the tempo on offense as the half wore on.  On one such drive, Abby Galazka got ahead of the field and was taken out by the Caldwell goalkeeper in the box, resulting in a penalty kick and a yellow card on the keeper.   Lauren Sullivan took the kick and easily scored giving the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

Sullivan's penalty kick goal was her second such goal of the season, tying the school record for most PK goals in one season (Maureen Dugan, 2006 and Carly DiGiovanni (3 times, 2010, 2011, 2012)).

The Griffins had six shots on goal in the opening half (12 shots total) while the Cougars managed two shots on goal and four total.

The second half saw both teams put three shots on goal with the two goalkeepers stopping them all.  Kaitlyn Carter recorded her fourth shutout of the season and finished the game with five saves for her seventh win.

The Griffins outshot the Cougars 21-9 in the contest (9-5 on goal).

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team will take to the road on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 when they travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware.  Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
