Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Griffins Fall in Overtime to Spartans

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team rallied from a six point deficit late in the fourth quarter to send their game against Saint Thomas Aquinas College into overtime before the Spartans came away with a 72-68 overtime win to hand the Griffins their first road loss of the season.

The Griffins are now 3-3 overall while the Spartans improve to 5-1.

Emily Chmiel recorded her first double-double of the season, scoring a team high 18 points and grabbing a game high 12 rebounds.  The sophomore center connected on seven of 12 shots from the field while also adding two blocks.   Leah Miller added ten points and five rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.  Bri Hewlett and Morgan Orloski chipped in nine points apiece.

STAC erased a one-point griffin lead with a 7-0 run in the later part of the fourth quarter to take a 60-54 lead with 3:33 left.  Chmiel then keyed a 6-0 run, scoring all six points scoring the first four after grabbing an offensive rebound and the last two following a block and a defensive rebound, tying the game at 60-60 with 1:05 left.  Neither team scored in the final 65 seconds forcing the overtime.

Miller's jumper with three minutes left in the extra period gave the Griffins a 64-63 lead but the Spartans scored the next five to go up by four 68-64 with under a minute remaining.  Chmiel made it a two point game 68-66 with 42 seconds left but the Spartans made four of six from the free throw line in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.

For the third straight game, the Griffins were plagued by turnovers, committing 24 on the afternoon, leading to 30 points scored by the Spartans.  This was partially offset by the Griffins dominance on the offensive glass, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 21 second chance points to STAC's seven.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team opens conference play on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 when they travel to face Jefferson University. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
