Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carter's Career Game Sparks Griffins to win over Firebirds

Kaitlyn Carter produced one of the best fourth quarter efforts by a Griffins player this season as the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team rallied to defeat host University of the district of Columbia 63-57 Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

The Griffins, now winners of two straight games, improve to 5-4 overall.  UDC drops to 5-5.

Carter was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field with nine fourth quarter points en route to a career high 18, the only CHC player to reach double figures.  She also led the team with nine rebounds and two steals and added four assists. Carter finished the game shooting 70% (7-10) from the field including a 3-5 (60%) effort from three point range.  Siobhan Boylan added nine points (all 3-pt. FG) and dished out five assists.  Bri Hewlett and Bri Rider added eight points apiece.  Boylan also had two steals while Emily Chmiel had three blocks and Abbey Spratt had five assists.  Morgan Sterner also had four assists

UDC had whittled away a nine point Griffin lead in the first half to take a three point lead in the third quarter with rider's basket cutting it to one, 47-46, heading into the fourth and final period.

Boylan opened the fourth quarter with a three point basket and Carter added a layup to give the Griffins a 51-47 lead.   The Firebirds followed with an 8-2 run to lead 55-53 with 5:40 remaining.  Carter followed with a steal and a layup and then a three-point bucket as the Griffins regained the lead.  She then assisted on Sterner's three point basket to cap an 8-0 run and push the Griffins lead to 61-55 with 2:43 left.  Neither team scored for the next 2:20 until UDC's Tori Williams made one of two from the line to pull the Firebird's within five 61-56.  Morgan Orloski and Spratt each made one free throw in the final 21 seconds to seal the win.

An 8-0 run by the Griffins to end the first quarter staked Chestnut Hill to a 22-13 lead.  The Griffins got a basket apiece from Emily Sekerak and Sara Tamoun and two from Rider.  The CHC lead oscillated between three and seven points for much of the second quarter before the firebirds used a 9-4 run to pull within two at halftime 33-31 before taking their first lead of the game at 38-36 midway through the third quarter but never increased it to more than a one-possession game heading into the fourth.
Latavia Jackson and Shannell Haskins led the Firebirds with 12 and 10 points respectively.  Jackson and Destiny Ryles had seven rebounds apiece while Ryles dished out five assists.

For the game, the Griffins shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field, their first 40%+ effort in four games.  UDC shot 35.1% (20-57).   Both took 16 free throw attempts with the Griffins making two more (11-9).  CHC also made eight three-points baskets to UDC's seven.  The Griffins equaled their season high with 45 rebounds, outrebounding the Firebirds 45-31.  CHC also had a season-high 28 turnovers which only translated into 12 UDC points.  UDC committed 21 turnovers with CHC producing 20 points off the miscues.  The Griffins also had 21 assists on their 22 field goals.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, December 17, 2022, when they host regionally ranked LeMoyne college at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
