Griffins Dominant as Team Earns First Conference Win of Season

A dominant effort by the Chestnut Hill college Men's Basketball team with five players reaching double figures led the Griffins to an 86-70 victory over Holy Family University Thursday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The win was the Griffins first conference triumph this season as they improve to 1-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games  and 6-7 overall   The Tigers dropped to 0-2 in league play and 7-7 overall

Trevonn Pitts came off the bench to lead all scorers with a season-high 18 points (5-6 FG, 8-8 FT). Pitts' perfect performance from the line is the first such effort by a Griffin where they made at least eight or more free throws without a miss since Ed McWade went 8-for-8 against Bloomfield in January 2019.

James Rider added 15 points (6-12 FG, 3-6 3FG) , also a season high. Conor Regan scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Adam Angwafo scored a career high 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench.   Noah Charles rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.  Nigel Haughton led all players with 11 rebounds while also dishing out three assists.  Pitts and Charles also tied for the team lead with three assists.

Three lead changes in the first four minutes of the game occurred before the Griffins took the lead for good on a three ball from Regan at the 16 minute mark, 6-5.  Over the next eight minutes the Griffins built their lead to double digits 27-17.  CHC added to the lead with an 11-2 run, taking a 38-19 lead with 3:57 left in the half.  The Tigers closed out the half with 14-5 run to pull within ten at the break 43-33.

The Tigers closed within six 48-42 early in the second half but the Griffins quickly pushed the lead back to double digits  increasing the margin to as much as 22, 82-60 on two Neal Hill free throws with three minutes left.  A 10-4 run to close out the game by the Tigers cut the lead to its final margin of 16.

David Robinson , Jr. led the Tigers with 14 points while Rick'Keem Mixson added 12.  Malik Archer and Aamir hurst added ten points apiece.

The Griffins shot 52.5% for the game, making 32 of 61 shots.  He Tigers made 27 of 62 shots from the field (43.5%).  The Griffins had a sizable advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Tigers 42-28 while committing just 12 turnovers (HFU-13).

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team is back in action on Saturday, December 31 when they travel to face Bloomfield college in Bloomfield New Jersey.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
