The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team's offense struggled all night as they hosted Georgian Court University for their final regular season home game as the Lions snapped the Griffins nine-game home winning streak pinning a 62-55 loss on the first-place Griffins.
The Griffins fall to 22-5 overall and 15-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and now sit in a tie for first place in the CACC South Division with University of the Sciences, a victor over Jefferson. The two teams will face each other on Saturday for the division title and the number one seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament. Georgian Court improves to 12-12 overall and 9-8 in league play.
Prior to the game the Griffins honored their five seniors;
Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.); Morgan Orloski (Bethlehem, Pa.); Leah Miller (Punxsutawney, Pa.); Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) and Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) with a short ceremony highlighting some of their accomplishments over their careers.
Hewlett wound up being the only Chestnut Hill player to score double figures, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds.Â
Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.) added eight rebounds to tie for the team lead. Sebold had nine points and five assists while
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) added nine points and
Lindsey Lane eight.
The Griffins scored the first seven points of the game before the Lions roared back to close the gap to three by the end of the first quarter, 13-10.Â
The second quarter saw Georgian Court outscore the Griffins 23-12 and take an eight-point lead into the locker room at the half 33-25.
The Lions opened up a 12-point lead three minutes into the third quarter and had the Griffins playing catchup the rest of the way, closing the gap to five on
Morgan Sterner's (Northampton, Pa.) bank shot with 40 seconds left, 45-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kaitlyn Carter's (Philadelphia, Pa.) layup early in the fourth quarter brought the Griffins within two 45-43 and Lanes free throw with 3:57 left brought the Griffins within one, 53-52 but that would be as close as they would get as the Lions closed out the game on a 9-2 spurt to secure the win.
Chestnut Hill uncharacteristically missed 13 free throws on the night, shooting just 129-for-32 from the free throwline (59.4%)  while also shooting just 30.2% from the field (16-53) their lowest total in a conference game this season. Georgian Court shot 41.4% (24-58) and out rebounded the Griffins 44-36, leading to a 15-8 advantage on second chance points.
The Chestnut Hill women's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 26, 2022 for their last regular season game, traveling to nearby University of the Sciences. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
