Chargers Hand Griffins their Second Straight Loss

Dominican College pulled away late midway through the second half as they handed the Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team their second consecutive loss 97-82 Wednesday night at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York.

The Griffins falls to 11-10 overall and 8-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Dominican improves to 16-4 overall and 9-3 in league play.

Amir Warrick (Washington, D.C.) and Conor Regan (Mullica Hill, N.J.) scored 24 and 23 points respectively to pace the Griffins.  MJ Iraldi (West Deptford, N.J.) added 16 points while Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md.) chipped in 12 points and had a team high seven rebounds. Warrick and Regan had six rebounds apiece.  Haughton led the team with six assists.

The Griffins built an early six-point lead in the first half 20-14 before Dominican charged back with a 15-3 run to take a 29-23 lead with 5:46 left.  Baskets by Regan and Warrick closed the gap to two 29-27 but the chargers followed with an 11-4 run to lead 40-31.  Two three pointers from Regan cut the lead back to three 40-37 with two minutes left.  The two teams played even-up basketball the final two minutes of the half with the Chargers taking a 45-42 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Regan's layup in the early minutes of the second half tied the game at 47-47 before the Chargers pushed their way back on top by five 58-51 with 14:12 left forcing a Griffins timeout.  Both teams went toe-to-toe over the next five minutes with the Griffins shaving just one point off the lead, trailing 71-65 with nine minutes left. Haughton's traditional three-point play closed the gap to 73-68 with 7:47 left.  The Chargers followed with a 13-4 run to lead 86-72 with 3:32 left in regulation. Chestnut Hill would get no closer the rest of the way before falling 97-82.

Wahaad Johnson led the Chargers with 31 points while Jalen Burgess added 28.

Both teams shot well with the Chargers shooting 62.3% (38-61) for the game and the Griffins making 54% (34-63) of their shots.  Dominican made three more three-point baskets and four more free throws and took advantage of 17 CHC turnovers leading to 23 points.  Chestnut Hill scored just six points off ten DC turnovers.

The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, February 12, 2022 when they face Caldwell University in Caldwell, New Jersey.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
