The Chestnut Hill College Women's basketball team battled back from a four point deficit in the final minute of regulation to force overtime against Dominican College but the Chargers came out blazing in the overtime, outscoring the Griffins 17-10 to snap the Griffins 13-game winning streak with a 79-72 win.
The Griffins fall to 19-4 overall and 12-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Dominican improves to 12-11 and 7-6 in league play.
Lauren Crim (Warrington, Pa.) led the Griffins with 18 points while
Bri Hewlett (North Wales, Pa.) added 14 points and recorded her third double-double of the season with a game and career-high 16 rebounds.Â
Lindsey Lane (Havertown, Pa.) added 13 pints while
Cassie Sebold (Willow Grove, Pa.) chipped in 12 and led the team with eight assists.
Dominican scored the first eight points of the overtime by Lane made two free throws to cut the deficit to six 70-64 with 1:09 left.  Â
Trinity Brittingham's (Middletown, Del.) three pointer pulled the Griffins within five with 11 seconds left but that's as close as the Griffins would get as the Chargers made four free throws in the final ten seconds to seal the win.
Dominican forged a 60-56 with a 1:16 left in the fourth quarter when Crim hit a three-point basket to close the gap to one. After a DC layup, Sebold sank a free throw and Hewlett followed with two more to tie the game at 62-62 with 36.6 seconds left, forcing the overtime as neither team scored.  Two ties and six lead changes highlighted the first nine minutes of the quarter until the Griffins rally.
Abbey Spratt (Doylestown, Pa.) started the scoring for the Griffins in the third quarter with a three-point basket as the Griffins gradually built a seven-point lead 46-39. Â Dominican charged back with three straight baskets to cut the lead back to one 46-45 before
Emily Chmiel (Doylestown, Pa.) sank a free throw to break the run. A turnover from the Griffins led to DC's Khay'la Latimer sinking a three at the buzzer to give the Chargers a 48-47 lead heading into the final period.
The two teams battled through much of the second quarter before the Chargers took a four-point lead 29-25. Crim's second three-ball of the day closed the gap within one 29-28 with 2:19 left and a Sebold layup put the Chargers back on top 30-29. Chmiel added two free throws and then Chargers went 1-2 from the line in the final minute as the Griffins took a 32-30 lead at the half.
The first quarter saw three ties and three lead changes with the Griffins taking a four-point lead at 16-12 before the Chargers rallied to tie the game at 16-16. Hewlett put up six points and Crim added five to pace the Griffins offense.
Samantha McClutchy led the Chargers with 19 points off the bench while Alexis Suarez  added 18 points and a game-high 11 assists.
For the game, the Chargers shot 40.9% from the field, while the Griffins shot 36.7%. Dominican scored 22 points off  19 Griffin turnovers while the Griffins managed just 10 off 11 Dominican's miscues. Chestnut Hill had a slight rebounding edge 40-39.
The Chestnut Hill women's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 12, 2022 with a game at Caldwell University. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
