The Chestnut Hill College Softball team produced 15 runs and 19 hits as they swept a doubleheader from Lincoln University 7-4 and 8-2 in their home opening twin bill at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field Tuesday afternoon.
The two wins were the first two of the season for the Griffins (2-8) who also swept their home opener for the first time since the 2016 season (two wins vs. Goldey-Beacom). The Lions fall to 1-11 with the pair of losses.
In the opener
Steph Tonuci had two of the Griffins' four hits as the team rallied from a 4-0 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning.Â
Lily Reid earned her first win of the season, improving to 1-3 on the season  Reid struck out six and walked one in the complete game effort.
Lincoln scored in each of their first three at-bats to jump out to a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. The Griffins sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning producing their biggest inning of the season thus far – seven runs. Chestnut Hill took advantage of four Lincoln errors in the inning to help the rally.
Peyton Baldwin drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run before
Taylor Carter reached on an error and eventually reached third on the same play via another error, allowing three runs to score and tie the game at 4-4. Tonuci then singled to score Carter and give the Griffins a 5-4 lead. A walk to
Samantha Toro followed and after both players executed a double steal, Tonuci scored Chestnut Hill's sixth run via a wild pitch – all with no outs being made. Toro later scored the final run when
Anastasia Watson reached on a one out error.
Staked with a 7-4 lead, Reid went to work on the mound, retiring the last nine batters she faced to preserve the win.
In game two, The Griffins batted around in the first inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead as they cruised to an 8-2 win. Ten different players had at least one hit for the Griffins as the team produced 15 total hits.Â
Ariana Carreno led the way with three hit while Tonuci, Reid and
Madison Petroski each had two. Petroski also earned her first win of the season, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four in the complete game effort.
Tonuci singled to open the first inning and was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Petroski singled and stole second and scored on Carreno's double. Watson followed with a double scoring Carreno and later scored on
Skylar Cunningham's single. Reid and
Santina Arena added singles to load the basses for Baldwin. Baldwin singled through the left side to score Cunningham and Carter reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Reid with the fifth run of the inning.
The Lions got two runs back in their half of the second with Amaya Townsend hitting a two-run home run to left field.
The score remained 5-2 until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffins added two more runs. Toro's two-out single scored Baldwin and Tonuci followed with a double to score Toro to make the score 7-2. The Griffins added their final run on a double steal with
Kayla Rolon swiping second and Carreno swiping home in the sixth.
The stolen bases by Rolon and Carreno was just two of 11 on the afternoon by the Griffins. Tonuci and Petroski had three stolen bases apiece while Rolon finished the day with two.
The Chestnut Hill College Softball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 when they host Shippensburg University in a regional contest at the Chestnut Hill college Softball Field.Â
