Ariana Carreno and
Madison Petroski combined for six of the Griffins nine total hits yesterday afternoon as the Chestnut Hill College Softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Shippensburg University 7-0 and 11-2 at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field in Philadelphia.
The Griffins fall to 2-10 with the two losses while Shippensburg improves to 10-4.
In the opener,
Petroski (Sickerville, N.J.) and
Carreno (Pompano Beach, Fla.) had two hits apiece with
Kayla Rolon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recording the Griffins only other hit in the game as the Raiders put up three unearned runs in the first inning en route to their 7-0 win.
Petroski took the loss on the mound pitching 5.1 innings and allowing all seven runs (four earned).
The Griffins had their best opportunity to score in the opening inning as Petroski delivered a one-out single and Carreno hit a ground rule double to put two runners in scoring position with just one out. Â Shippensburg winning pitcher Emma Flattery retired the next two batters to end the threat.Â
Shippensburg added a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to round out their scoring. The Griffins put a runner on in the sixth via Petroski's second hit of the day and Carreno and Rolon had back-to-back singles in the seventh. Carreno eventually reached third but was unable to score.
In the second game the Griffins struck first as
Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.) led off with a hard hit infield single and eventually scored on
Anastasia Watson's (Claymont, Del.) infield groundout, giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders struck back in their next at-bat with back-to-back home runs by Morgan Lindsey and Morgan Brumbaugh to take a 3-1 lead. Maelynn Leber later hit a grand slam home run in the third to increase their lead to 7-1.
In the bottom half of the third, Petroski had a leadoff single and came around to score
on Skylar Cunningham's (Covina, Calif.) sacrifice fly making the score 7-2.
Leber hit her second home run of the day in the sixth inning, giving the Raiders an 11-2 lead. Two batters later Carreno saved another home run with a diving catch into the fence in straightaway centerfield. Â Leber then retired the Griffins in order in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) (1-4) took the loss for the Griffins pitching 2.1 innings and allowing the first seven runs.
The Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team returns to action on Friday March 18, 2022 when they host Bowie State University at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field.   First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday but was postponed due to cold weather and field conditions.
