The Chestnut Hill College Softball team had one of their best offensive games of the 2022 season on Friday as they defeated Bowie State University 11-10 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at the chestnut Hill softball field in Philadelphia.
The Griffins fell just short in game two, losing 5-4 to finish the day with a split of the two-game affair. Chestnut Hill is now 3-11 overall while bowie State is 6-8-1.
Six different Chestnut Hill players had multiple hit games in the opener, led by
Victoria Grillo's (Staten Island, N.Y.) three singles, tying her career high for hits in a game.
Kayla Rolon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had four RBI with two singles and a bases-loaded walk.
Anastasia Watson (Claymont, Del.) also drove in two runs with a pair of singles.
Ariana Carreno (Pompano Beach, N.Y.) had the Griffins' only extra-base hit of the game, an RBI double in the second to go along with a first inning single.
Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.) and
Taylor Carter (Fort Washington, Pa.) also had two hits in the game.
Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) earned the win, her second of the season, pitching the first four innings.
Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) came in to pitch the final three and picked up her first save of the season.
The Bulldogs jumped on Petroski for five runs in the first inning with nearly all of BSU's four hits going into left field. The Griffins however did the same to BSU pitcher Evelyn Buehlman in their first at bat, scoring three times to close within two runs 5-3. Tonuci led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Petroski reached on an erorr and stole second and Carreno had an infield single to load the bases for Rolon who plated the first run with a walk. Watson had an RBI infield single and Carreno later scored on a double play ball.
Watson saved a run in the second and kept the Bulldogs off the board with an alert throw to home to gun down the Bulldogs' lead run who was trying to score on an infield grounder.
Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.) walked to lead off the second and later scored on Tonuci's RBI single into center field. Two batters later Tonuci scored the tying run as Carreno doubled to center field. Rolon followed with a single to score Carreno and later scored on Watson's RBI single to give the Griffins' a 7-5 lead.
The Bulldogs battled back to tie the score in the top half of the third, scoring twice to make it a 7-7 game. The Griffins answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the third as Petroski drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Rolon plated two more with a RBI single to give Chestnut Hill a 10-7 lead.
Saniya Jones hit her second home run of the game for the Bulldogs in the fourth inning as Bowie State again tied the score at 10-10. Grillo singled with one out and later scored what would be the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fourth as Carter delivered an RBI single into left field.
The Bulldogs made one last threat in the fifth, loading the bases with one out before Reid got Breanna Harvey to look at a called third strike and Akira Pullen to fly out to end the threat. Reid gave up singles in the sixth and seventh before putting the finishing touch on three scoreless innings by again getting Harvey on a called third strike to secure the win.
In the second game Tonuci had three hits including her first home run of the season while driving in three as the Griffins fell 5-4.
Jordan Tavarez (Hammonton, N.J.) took the loss for Chestnut Hill, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up all five runs. Baldwin also had a multiple hit game with a pair of singles.
Bowie State held a 2-0 lead before Tonuci put the Griffins on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Carreno later singled and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. The Griffins took the lead one inning later on an RBI single from Tonuci.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the sixth with the big blow coming off the bat of Harvey, a two-run home run, taking a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Carter reached second on an error and scored on Tonuci's third hit of the day to close the gap to 5-4. Bowie State's Lindsey George retired the Griffins in order in their final at bat to earn the win in relief.
