The Chestnut Hill College Women's bowling team, seeded 12
th following Friday morning's qualifying rounds at the East Coast Conference Women's Bowling Championship, upset #5 seed Caldwell University 4-3 in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament.
The Griffins advance to play #4 seed Adelphi University at 8:00 a.m. in the next round of the best-of-seven Baker Format matches on Saturday at the Coram Country Lanes in Coram, New York.
The best-of-seven Baker format match based on seeding had the Griffins at #12 taking on Caldwell who finished their qualifying rounds seeded #5.  Chestnut Hill won the first two games 233-177 and 231-145. The Cougars battled back to win the next three games, 211-168, 235-188 and 190-149 to take a 3-2 lead and move the Griffins to the brink of elimination.Â
The Griffins won game six 225-171 to force a decisive game seven.  Chestnut Hill started the match with five strikes en route to an 184-160 win to take the match. The team averaged a season high 196.8 during the seven game match. Â
Maddie Gannon (Glenolden, Pa.) and
Jess Hollabaugh (Folsom, Pa.) filled 13 of 14 frames to lead the team in the match.
In the qualifying rounds earlier in the day, Chestnut Hill finished 12th out of 13 teams. In the first five matches of bakers the Griffins averaged 160.9 and had a total pinfall of 4,023. Hollabaugh led the team filling 78% of her frames during the five game baker matches.
Eryn Moore (Bainbridge, Pa.) filled 74% and Gannon filled 72%. Gannon also struck on 52% of her shots in the first five matches.Â
Chestnut Hill lost a close match to Molloy college 853-822 in the first round of qualifying and an even closer 769-766 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in round two. Nationally ranked Adelphi university (#25) defeated the Griffins 950-855 in round three and Bloomfield handed Chestnut Hill another close loss 869-849 in round four. Caldwell beat the Griffins in round five of qualifying 930-731.Â
