Griffins Split Softball Doubleheader with Millersville

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Millersville University, taking the first game 10-2 in five innings before dropping the second game 5-3.

The Griffins improve to 6-16 overall with the split while the Marauders are now 12-14.

Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.) and Ariana Carreno (Pompano Beach, Fla.) had three hits apiece in the opening game and both players drove in two runs as the Griffins scored in each of the first three innings and held Millersville in check en route to the win. All nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one hit in the game.

Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) earned her fourth win of the season allowing just two runs (one earned) on three huts while striking out eight batters.

Tonuci and Carreno singled in the first inning and the two players later scored on Kayla Rolon's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) infield groundout and Skylar Cunningham's (Covina, Calif.) single down the left field line, giving the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

In the single Tonuci scored Chestnut Hill's third run on a Carreno single with Petroski then scoring on Rolon's bunt single

Tonuci made the scored 6-0 in the third, driving in two runs with a double to centerfield before Millersville got on the board with a single run in the bottom half of the fourth.

Back-to-back-to-back singles from Carreno, Rolon and Cunningham in the fifth produced three more runs and the Griffins added their final run when Rolon scored on a passed ball.  Petroski gave up one run in the bottom of the fifth as the Marauders scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 10-2.

Petroski had three hits in game two as the Marauders rallied fir two runs in the fifth to edge the Griffins 5-3. And salvage a split.   Rolon, Cunningham and Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in one run apiece.

Millersville jumped on the scoreboard first with three runs of Petroski who was starting both ends of the twinbill.  An RBI double by Fried and a two run home run by D'Ottavio highlighted the Marauder scoring in the third inning.

The Griffins tied the game in the top half of the fourth as Tonuci, Petroski and Carreno led off the frame with singles with Rolon reaching on an error and Cunningham following with a single of her own.  Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) then delivered a squeeze bunt to score Carreno with the tying run.

Reid came in to pitch in the fourth inning and held the Marauders scoreless in the inning but the host team plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.  The Griffins had just two hits in their final two at-bats as the Marauders salvaged the split with a 5-3 win.

Reid took the loss in relief, allowing two unearned runs in three innings of work while striking out three.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team returns to action on Thursday, March 31, 2022 when they host Jefferson University at the CHC Softball Field.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
