Noah Cutting rallied from one-set down to win his match and give the Chestnut Hill College Men's Tennis team the clinching point as the Griffins went on to defeat Post University 5-2 on Monday afternoon and remain unbeaten in conference play.
The Griffins, ranked #61 in the most recent ITA Division II national poll, improve to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Eagles fall to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Cutting (Bury St. Edmonds, England) had lost the first set of his match at #2 singles to Gustavo Kerber 5-7. Â He proceeded to rally and take the second set 6-3 before winning the match in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to give the Griffins their fourth point and clinch the match win.
The Griffins swept the three doubles contests to earn their first point of the match with
Domagoj Dugandzic (Stuttgart, Germany) and
Joao Sousa (Figueroa da Foz, Portugal) winning at #3 doubles 6-3 over Jose Nunez and Niklas Langenfield to start things off.Â
Tom Pitchley (London, England) and
Joseph Gregory Kvint (Huntington Valley, Pa.) followed with a 6-4 win over Cooper Smith and Anton Andersson at #1 doubles and Cutting and
Mark Gladkyy (Vineland, N.J.) defeated Nino Krneta and Gustavo Kerber, 6-4 at #2 doubles to complete the sweep.
With the doubles point secure, the Griffins needed just three singles wins to secure the team win. Pitchley got the first win with a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Krneta at #1 singles and Sousa got the second, beating Andersson 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at #4 singles, giving Chestnut Hill a 3-0 lead in the match.
Post got on the board as Smith handed Kvint a 6-4, 7-5 loss at #3 singles, leaving the Griffins with three chances to earn the final point, which Cutting did in dramatic fashion in his match as he was the first of the three to finish.Â
Gladkyy and Dugandzic took their opponents to three sets at #6 and #5 singles respectively in the two remaining matches. Langenfeld scored a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Gladkyy at #6 singles to make the score 4-2, while Dugandzic was a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 winning over Nunez to give the Griffins the final point of the match and a 5-2 victory.
