The Chestnut Hill College softball team continued conference play Saturday afternoon, hosting Caldwell University for a Central Atlantic Collegiate conference doubleheader at the CHC softball field with the Cougars coming away with a sweep, 13-4 and 12-0.
Â
The losses drop the Griffins record to 8-20 overall and 0-8 in league play. Caldwell improves to 14-5 overall and 4-0 in league contests.
Â
Kayla Rolon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in two runs while
Ariana Carreno (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added one RBI in the first game on a double and single respectively. The Griffins also got hits from
Steph Tonuci (Barrington, N.J.) and
Madison Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.).
Â
Petroski took the loss to fall to 4-8 on the season, allowing seven Cougar runs over 1.1 innings.
Â
Caldwell scored four times in the first inning, three coming from a bases clearing double by Paige Sandoval. The Griffins came right back in the bottom half of the first plating two runs on Rolon's double to centerfield. Rolon later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Â
Maya Rodriguez's three run home run in the second made the score 7-3 and chased Petroski from the circle for
Jordan Tavarez (Hammonton, N.J.). The Cougars scored two more runs to lead 9-3.
Â
Tonuci delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the second and following a walk issued to Tavarez, Carreno singled to right field, scoring Tonuci with the Griffins' fourth run.
Â
Caldwell added one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to round out the scoring and earn a 13-4 win. Mariah Culver earned the win for the Cougars.
Â
Cougar pitchers held the Griffins to just three hits in the second game as they defeated Chestnut Hill 12-0 to complete the sweep.
Â
Caldwell scored five times in the second inning on five hits and three walks. The Griffins had their best opportunity to score in the bottom half of the inning as
Skylar Cunningham (Covina, Calif.) and
Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back singles but were left stranded on the basepaths.
Â
Cunningham had her second hit of the game in the fourth (a single) and Grillo walked with two out to give the Griffins another scoring opportunity but both were again stranded on the basepaths.
Â
The Cougars scored twice in the third once in the fourth and added four more runs in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Â
Sunday's non-conference doubleheader is postponed due to impending weather so the chestnut Hill College Softball team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 with a no-conference twinbill against East Stroudsburg University. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
