Petroski's Home Run Boosts Griffins to Doubleheader Split with Lightning on Senior Day.

Madison Petroski had her first four-hit game of the season which included a home run as the chestnut Hill College Softball team salvaged a split with Goldey-Beacom College with an 8-5 win in the second game of their doubleheader on Tuesday at the chestnut Hill College Softball Field.

Goldey-Beacom won the opener 9-0.  The doubleheader was the Griffins' last home games of the 2022 season.  Six seniors were playing the final home games of their career on Tuesday and the  Athletics Department and the softball team celebrated their careers in a ceremony prior to the start of game one.

With the split, the Griffins improve to 9-37 overall and 3-19 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.   Goldey-Beacom is now 21-21 overall and 8-14 in league play.

Seniors played a key role in the second game win.  Petroski (Sicklerville, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and also stole a base.  Senior pitcher Lily Reid (Texas City, Texas) allowed just two earned runs and seven hits while striking out four to earn her fourth win of the season.  Taylor Carter (Fort Washington, Pa.) had an RBI single in the Griffins' three-run fifth inning and Emma Peterson (Reading, Pa.) returned to the field for the first time this season after injuring her knee.  Peterson had a bloop single in her first at-bat. Seniors Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) and Victoria Grillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) split the catching duties in game two.

The Lightning struck first in the nightcap, scoring solo runs in the first and third innings before the Griffins came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.  Petroski started the rally with a one-out single  and scored on Ariana Carreno's (Pompano Beach, Fla.) single to left field.  Skyler Cunningham (Covina, Calif.) walked to load the bases for Kayla Rolon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who delivered a hard-hit single to right field plating two more runs and giving the Griffins the lead.

Chestnut Hill extended their lead in the fifth inning with three more runs.  Peyton Baldwin (Conshohocken, Pa.)  reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning and scored on Carter's hard-hit single that was just out of reach off the third baseman's glove.  Carter then scored when Petroski singled and the ball got away from the Lightning centerfielder.  Two batters later Carreno singled to score Petroski and make the score 6-2.

Petroski had her final hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth, a towering two-run home run that landed just over the left centerfield fence to make the score 8-2.

Both teams made the final half inning interesting, with the Griffins committing two errors and the Lightning tasking advantage to score three times and at one point putting the tying run on deck.  Goldey-Beacom had two runs in and runners on second and third with one out before Reid induced to fly ball outs , the first scoring the Lightning's fifth run and the second ending the game.

In the opener, Reid and Carter had the Griffins only two hits, both infield singles as the Lighting tagged Petroski for eight runs on 11 hits in the 9-0 loss.  The Lightning's last run was scored via an obstruction call.  Petroski also struck out five in the losing effort.

The Chestnut Hill College Softball team will play their final games of the 2022 season on Saturday April 30, 2022 when they travel to University of the Sciences for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
