Ten different players scored and had at least one field goal for the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team as they survived a second half surge from visiting Wilmington University and defeated the Wildcats 53-39 Wednesday evening at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins, now winners of four straight, improve to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference play. The wildcats fall to 1-15 overall and 0-6 in league contest.
Siobhan Boylan led the Griffins with nine points (3-4 3FG).
Morgan Orloski added eight points while
Emily Sekerak,
Emily Chmiel and
Sara Tamoun added six points apiece.Â
Leah Miller led the team with six rebounds while
Lauren Crim added five and a team high three assists.
The Griffins came out strong defensively holding the Wildcats without a field goal for the entire first quarter as they scored the first 12 points of the period and went into the second quarter leading 19-3.
The Wildcats finally got their first field goal of the game at the 6:57 mark of the second quarter on a layup by Jade Roberts who led her team with 16 points. The Wildcats got their only other basket of the period some 30 seconds later via a layup by Fatou Ndao (14 pts., 8 rebounds) as the Griffins extended their lead to 31-7 at halftime.
Wilmington began to chip away at the lead in the second half after a layup from Chmiel gave the Griffins their largest lead of the night at 39-14 midway through the period, closing within 15 before a 7-0 run by the Griffins (a three-ball and two free throws from Orloski and two free throws from Tamoun) pushed the lead back to 22 points 46-24 with a minute left. Â Â A Wildcat bucket made the score 46-26 heading into the final period.
The Wildcats opened the fourth quarter with a traditional three-point play from Ndao.Â
Lindsey Lane followed with a layup to push the lead up to 19, the Griffins largest of the period. Wilmington continued to creep closer, producing a 10-3 run to close within 12 51-39 with just 1:23 left. Chmiel added a bucket in the final minute to round out the scoring.
Neither team shot exceptionally well over the course of the game. After starting out 0-for-13, the Wildcats finished the game making 14 of their last 36 shots (39%) to finish the game shooting 28.6% (14-49). The Griffins who had their best shooting quarter in the opening stanza (8-17, 47.1%) finished the rest of the game shooting 10-for-41 (24.3%) to finish the contest with a 31% shooting mark (18-58). CHC made five three-point baskets to WU's one and shot slightly better from the free throw line (12-16, 75%) to Wilmington's 10-14 (71.4%). The Griffins outrebounded the Wildcats 41-36.
The Women's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday January 14, 2022 when they host Dominican university of New York at Sorgenti Arena. The Chargers are currently ranked #10 in the latest D2SIDA East Region Media poll. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
