Sekerak Scores Career-High as Griffins Rally to Defeat Golden Falcons

Emily Sekerak scored a career high 22 points, leading three players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Felician University 72-62 Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Griffins improve to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Golden Falcons fall to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Sekerak, making her first career start, connected on eight of 12 shots from the field and six of seven from the free throw line en route to her career high 22-point effort.  The sophomore forward also grabbed a career best seven rebounds.  Bri Rider was a perfect 4-4 from the field (three three-point baskets), producing 11 points while Morgan Orloski also added 11 points.

Defensively, Sekerak, Leah Miller and Siobhan Boylan had two blocks apiece while Kaitlyn Carter and Orloski had two steals apiece.  Avery White led the team with three assists.

It was the Griffins defense that took charge as the team overcame a six-point halftime deficit and a three-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter.  Rider and Morgan Sterner opened the scoring with a pair of three-pointers in the final stanza and after a Felician trey from Courtney Logan (12 points) at the 9:01 mark put the hosts up by two 57-55, the Griffins held Felician scoreless for the next 6:55 while producing a 14-0 run to take a 69-57 lead.  Sekerak had ten of the 14 points, making three of four shots from the field and four free throws.

Two free throws by Felician broke the scoring run and Rider countered with her third three-ball of the game with 1:38 remaining giving the Griffins a 72-59 lead.  Mimmi Hahne added a three-point basket for Felician with 58 seconds left (their first field goal in over eight minutes) to round out the scoring.

Felician had built their six-point lead as the Griffins offense went cold, making just two of ten shots as the Golden Falcons came alive, outscoring the Griffins 20-7 in the period to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Sekerak added six points in the third quarter as the Griffins cut the deficit in half.

The Griffins connected on eight of 13 shots from the field in the first quarter as they opened up a 24-17 lead.  Orloski led the way with nine first quarter points.

Katelyn Andres led the Golden Falcons with 19 points while Logan added 12.

For the game the Griffins shot 46.4% from the field (26-56) including an 8-for-20 effort from beyond the arc.  Felician shot 38.6% (22-57) from the field).  Felician held a 31-30 rebounding advantage while both teams committed over 20 turnovers apiece.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 when they host Jefferson University at Sorgenti arena.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
