Lauren Crim and
Morgan Orloski each made a pair of free throws in the final 26 seconds to seal what was an ugly victory for the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team over host Wilmington University, 50-44 Tuesday night at the WU Athletic Complex.
The Griffins improve to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Chestnut Hill's win was their fourth in a row and their ninth in their last ten games. Wilmington fall to 2-19 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Emily Sekerak led all scorers with 16 points (8-16 FG) and also had a team-high six rebounds. Crim added ten points (2-5 3FG, 4-5 FT).Â
Abbey Spratt led the team with three assists while
Kaitlyn Carter had three steals.
The Griffins started out slow as the Wildcats took a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. A three-pointer followed by two free throws by Crim closed the gap to 15-11 at quarters end.
Bri Rider's three-point field goal with 5:53 left in the second quarter gave the Griffin's their first lead of the game at 19-17. The Wildcats stayed close, tying the game twice before taking a brief 24-23 lead.  Sekerak's fifth basket of the half as time was running out gave Chestnut Hill a 25-24 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
The two teams exchanged one point leads in the opening minutes of the third quarter until a three-ball from
Bri Hewlett gave the Griffins a 30-28 lead. The Wildcats, however, finished the quarter on a 7-3 run to lead 35-33 heading into the final ten minutes of action.
Two steals by Carter led to layups as the Griffin s built a 44-39 lead with just under four minutes remaining. Sekerak added a turnaround jumper with 2:42 left to give Chestnut Hill a 46-42 lead before Crim and Orloski's free throws sealed the win.
Wilmington had the better shooting day, making 36.2% (17-47) while the Griffins connected on 18 of 57 shots (31.6%). Chestnut Hill made one more three-point field goal (5-4) and three more free throws (9-6). Both teams had 36 rebounds with the Griffins having a slight edge 14-10 on the offensive glass. The Griffins committed just 12 turnovers to the Wildcats 18.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 4, 2023 when the host the University of Bridgeport at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Â
