Antonia Linus scored twice as the Chestnut Hill college women's soccer team's offense came alive in the rain on Saturday as they defeated Post University 4-1 at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins even their record at 4-4-1 overall and improve to 3-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games. Post falls to 1-4-2 in league play and 2-7-2 overall. The Griffins' four goals were a season high.
Linus tallied both her goals within a six minute span in the second half. She connected on an unassisted tally at the start of the 61
st minute, giving the Griffins a 3-0 lead and added her second at the start of the 67
th minute to make the score 4-0. On Linus' second goal,
Alyssa DeGeorge took a corner kick and short kicked it direct to
Elisabeth Stokes who crossed left to right to find Linus who headed it in for the score. Linus had an assist in the first period and finished the game with five points.
Rachel Apsley got the Griffins on the board at the 18:22 mark with a slide kick of a shot that went past Post goalie Alexis Campbell for a 1-0 lead. DeGeorge took the ball clean down the right side, passed it to Linus in the middle who found Apsley for the score. Â
Lauren Sullivan scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 49
th minute, giving the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
Post's only score came from Hailey McGee who lofted a high shot from about 30 yards out that just went over the outstretched hands on Griffin goalkeeper
Ellie Stratz into the top center portion of the net late in the 68th minute to round out the scoring on the afternoon.
For the game, the Griffins outshot the Eagles 17-8 (10-4 on target) and also took seven corner kicks to Post's two.Â
Stratz finished the game with three saves and earned the win. Campbell took the loss and recorded six saves.
The Griffins' women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to face Wilmington University in Newark, Delaware. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
