Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Griffins Rally to Upset Golden Falcons

Two late goals in the second half propelled the Chestnut Hill college Men's soccer team to a 2-1 upset victory over region-ranked Felician university Saturday afternoon at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill.

The win gave the Griffins their third conference win of the season against five losses as the improve to 4-7-1 overall.  The Golden Falcons, ranked #3 in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll, dropped their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the season and fell to 7-1 in league play and 10-3-1 overall.

Trailing 1-0 at the start of the 79th minute, Juan Ortiz drew a foul within the box, resulting in a penalty kick.  The kick rebounded off Golden Falcon goalkeeper Emanuele Moretti and right back to Ortiz who put it into the net to the left of Moretti to tie the score at 1-1.

Midway through the 80th minute, Ortiz took a free kick from around 35 yards out. The shot was again stopped by Moretti but not cleanly as it bounced off his hands.  David Cortez then kicked the loose ball into the net for the go-ahead goal.

Chestnut Hill's defense, led by Jose Cuadra, then took over, holding the Golden Falcon's to just two shots (one on target and saved by GK Eran Shifris in the 82nd minute and one wide as time was expiring) over the final ten minutes while constantly pushing the ball into Felician territory to force the Golden Falcons to defend more often then moving their offense down the field.

Shifris was superb in goal, stopping six of seven Felician shots on goal, earning his fourth win of the season.  Moretti had seven saves on the afternoon.

For the game, Chestnut Hill outshot Felician 19-12 (15 in the second half) and held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.  The Golden Falcons took one more corner kick than the Griffins (5-4).

The Griffins take the pitch for their final home game of the 2023 season on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 when they host Holy Family University.  Prior to the game the Griffins will honor their senior players from this year's squad.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
