Griffins Complete Season Sweep of Quakers with 28-14 Win

Jerry Clark's  interception return for a touchdown provided the go-ahead score as the Chestnut Hill College Sprint Football Team defeated the University of Pennsylvania 28-14 Saturday night at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The Griffins improve to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in the college Sprint Football League South division.  The Quakers fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in divisional play.  The griffins complete a two-game sweep of the season series against thew Quakers.

Clark is the second Griffin this season to return an interception for a touchdown and just the third Chestnut Hill player in the history of the program to do so.  His pick and subsequent 40-yard return for the score came with 20 seconds left in the third quarter and gave the Griffins a 21-14 lead.

Chestnut Hill quarterback C.J. Small threw two touchdown passes in the first half, both on catch-and-runs for big gains.   Small found Nick Ocampo open for a 63-yard touchdown catch near the end of the first quarter for a 7-0 CHC lead.   Kyree Griffin's 96 yard reception in the second quarter gave the Griffins a 14-0 lead.  Griffin's touchdown catch is the second longest reception in program history. (Kindrik Branch had a 99-yard touchdown reception in week one vs the Quakers).

Small finished his night with 286 yards passing on 11 completions out of 17 attempts.  He threw two touchdown passes.  Anthony Cancellare threw the third CHC touchdown pass, a 22 yard toss to Keshad Turner for the Griffins' final score in the fourth quarter. 

Griffin finished the game with three catches for 127 yards. He was one of eight different griffins to catch at least one pass on the evening.   Ocampo had two catches for 66 yards.

On the ground Tyler Smith carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards. He added 22 yards on kickoff returns to finish the game with 76 all-purpose yards.

Defensively, Clark, Myron Brooks and Hunter Oaks all had interceptions.  Jonathan Havrilak led all players with 16 tackles and had one of the Griffins' two sacks on the night.  Havrilak also tied the school's and his own single game record with two quarterback hurries.  Larry Fonville had the other sack.  Clark added ten tackles.

The Quakers scored their first touchdown with 5:39 left in the second quarter on a three yard run by Tom Rebstock (104 yards rushing).  Quarterback Ty Scherer (69 yards rushing, 89 yards passing) ran the ball in from 23 yards out for the tying score with 5:37 left in the third quarter, knotting the score at 14-14.

The sprint football team is back in action on Saturday, November 4, 2023, when they host Mansfield University for their final game of the season at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in Conshohocken, Pa.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
