Three players scored in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team used a dominant second half to earn their first win of the season, defeating Queens College 63-46, Sunday afternoon at the East Region Conference Challenge at Molloy University in Rockville Centre, New York.
The Griffins are now 1-1 while Queens falls to 0-2. Chestnut Hill outscored Queens 35-23 in the second half.
Bridie McCann led all scorers with 18 points (6-11 FG, 3-5 3FG) while
Avery White and
Caleigh Edwards had 11 points apiece.
Kaitlyn Carter had nine points and led the team with ten rebounds. Edwards, Carter, and
Bri Rider had four assists apiece.
Caraline Herb led the team with four steals to go along with eight points.
The Griffins led by five at the half but were outscored 9-3 in the first six minutes of the third quarter as Queens took a 32-31 lead.  McCann then started a 9-0 run for the Griffins with a three-point basket with White adding a layup and Carter then scoring the next four points to give the Griffins a 40-32 lead. The eight point margin stood as the two teams headed into the final quarter.
Edwards opened the fourth quarter with the first of her four baskets starting the Griffins on a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 18, 54-36. The sophomore guard also closed out the run with two straight layups. After a basket from the Knights,
Sara Tamoun sank a three-point shot to give Chestnut Hill their biggest lead of the game, 57-38 with 5:50 remaining. Queens cut the deficit to 13 but Edwards calmly sank a three-point basket with two minutes remaining and added a free throw in the final minute to provide the Griffins with their final points on the afternoon en route to the 17-point win.
For the game, the Griffins shot 34.4% (22-64) from the field while the Knights made 34.5% (20-58). Chestnut Hill outscored the Knights 21-6 from beyond the arc and 12-4 from the free throw line. The Knights held a 46-35 rebounding advantage. The Griffins took advantage of 31 turnovers by Queens, leading to 26 points. The Knights scored just six points off 14 Griffin turnovers.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, for their home opener against University of the district of Columbia. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
