A late second half rally by the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team came up short as West Chester University beat the Griffins 74-68 Wednesday evening at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins fall to 0-6 while the Golden Rams improve to 2-3.
Three players scored in double figures for the Griffins, led by
Argel Pettit IV's career high 20 points. Pettit connected on six of nine shots from the field, including a 3-for-6 effort from three point range. He was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.Â
Neal Hill added 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds.Â
Noah Charles added 13 points. Â
Dylan Majors led the team with three assists.
Chestnut Hill trailed by double digits for most of the contest and were behind by 19 points, 64-45 with 8:11 remaining when they began to whittle away at the deficit. Â
Alejandro Redondo Cybak started a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to bring the deficit down to single digits, 66-57 with 5:04 left. Charles capped the run with a layup. A free throw from Neal pulled the Griffins within eight before four straight points from WCU pushed the lead back up to 12, 70-58 with 2:18 left.Â
Kamal Lee scored five of the Griffins next seven points, capping a 7-0 run with a traditional three point to cut the Golden Rams lead to five 70-65 with 58.9 seconds left.
Five points however was as close as the Griffins would get as WCU made four straight free throws to go back up by nine with 31 seconds. Pett's three point basket with 0.4 left pulled CHC within six as the final buzzer sounded.
For the game the Golden Rams shot 50.9% (29-57) from the field while the Griffins connected on 40% (20-50) of their shots. Both teams attempted 18 three pointers with West Chester making seven to CHC's six. Chestnut Hill held a big advantage on the free throw line, making 22 of 25 shots (88%) while the Golden Rams made just nine of ten (90%). The Golden Rams also held a 34-24 rebounding advantage.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday November 29, 2023, when they open conference play with a game at Wilmington University. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
