Griffins Finish Second at the Wildcat D2 Invitational; Fall to Mercyhurst in Championship Game

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Bowling team began Sunday's bracket competition at the Wildcat D2 Invitational in fourth place and climbed the bracket with two wins before losing to nationally ranked Mercyhurst University  4.5-2.5 in the championship match at Bowlerama in New Castle, Delaware.

The second place finish is the Griffins best finish at a tournament this season and their highest finish since capturing the title at the New York Metro Invitational in January 2021.

Chestnut Hill, seeded fourth, took on #3 seed and tournament host Wilmington university in their first match, defeating the Wildcats 4-3.  CHC lost the opening match 222-204 before winning the next three 169-136, 185-135 and 205-156.  The Wildcats came back and took games five and six 234-123 and 242-178 to even the match at 3-3.  Chestnut ill won game seven 189-177 to advance up the bracket to face #2 seed Daemen University.  Maddie Gannon filled 13 of 14 frames while Eryn Moore filled 11 of 14.

The Griffins took an early 2-0 lead against Daemen with scores of 212-156 and 197-156.  The Wildcats rallied to win game three 213-156 before the Griffins captured the final two games 209-195 and 163-155 to win the match 4-1.  Jess Hollabaugh filled all ten frames bowled while Moore and Gannon each filled nine of ten.  The win again moved the Griffins up the bracket where they would face the top seed and nationally ranked (#14) Mercyhurst for the championship.

Chestnut Hill opened the match with a 202-192 win with Mercyhurst tying the match at 1-1 with a 217-194 win in game two.  Game three ended in a 185-185 tie keeping the match even at 1.5-1.5.  The Lakers dominated game four 279-161 and took a commanding lead (3.5-1.5) with a 236-179 win in game five.  The Griffins rebounded in game six winning 202-148 but the Lakers had a strong showing in the final game winning, 224-183 to win the match 4.5-2.5 and take the team championship for the tournament. Kayleina McGonigal, Gannon and Hollabaugh all filled 12 of 14 frames while Moore filled 11 of 14.

The Griffins return to competition in mid-march for their final tune-up before the Central Atlantic collegiate conference championships, participating in the Northeast Season Ender, hosted by Wilmington University, March 18-19, 2023.
