The Chestnut Hill college men's lacrosse team started their 2023 season on Saturday as they faced Seton Hill University in a battle of the griffins at Victory field in Lafayette Hill.
Seton Hill, ranked #11 in the most recent USILA DII poll, scored four early goals and made it stand up as they came away with a 7-4 win improving to 2-1 on the season.
Noah Hammon scored twice for Chestnut Hill while
Austin Jones made 16 saves in the losing effort.Â
Zach Schultz won eight of 13 faceoffs and led 12 different CHC players with four ground balls.Â
Kyle Gartenmeyer had three caused turnovers to lead all players.
SHU scored their first goal less than three minutes into the contest on a man-up opportunity and made the score 2-0 three minutes later. The visitors would add two more goals before the period ended to take a 4-0 lead.
Back and forth action dominated the second quarter with Chestnut Hill getting on the board late in the period on Hammon's first goal of the game via a pass from
Thomas Austin with 4:31 remaining. The score remained 4-1 at halftime and through much of the first seven minutes of the third quarter when the home Griffins'
Zach Jastrzebski fed
Cade Johnson for CHC's second goal, cutting the lead to 4-2 with 8:0 left. Seton Hill scored less than a minute later to go back up 5-2.Â
Jack Clyne made it a two-score game, 5-3, putting the ball in the net with 3:32 left in the period.
The two teams exchanged goals in the first five minutes of the final period with Seton Hill striking first at the 13:12 mark then Hammon adding his second goal of the game with 10:47 left.Â
Nate Matthews assisted on the play as CHC closed within two 6-4.
Seton Hill added an insurance goal with 7:42 left, taking a 7-4 lead and rounding out the scoring.
Chestnut Hill men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 when they host the College of St. Rose at Victory Field at 11:00 AM.
