Griffins Swept in Season Opening Doubleheader

The Chestnut Hill college women's softball team opened their 2023 season Sunday morning with a doubleheader against Mansfield university at the CHC Softball field.  The Griffins were swept by the Mountaineers 5-0 and 6-4.

In the opener Mansfield scored three unearned runs in the first inning setting the table for a 5-0 win.  Abigaile Alt-Ambriz took the complete game loss allowing just five hits while striking out eight MU batters.

The Griffins had their opportunities in the opener, leaving the bases loaded in the second inning and put two runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but failed to capitalize.  Seven different Griffins reached base in the game either by a single (four) or a walk.

Mansfield added a run in the third and  seventh innings to complete their scoring.

In the second game, Erin McCarthy took the loss, allowing three fourth inning runs as the Mountaineers came away with a 6-4 win.

Trailing 1-0 the Griffins got their first run of the season as Mianna Lopez Del Haro doubled to lead off the second inning and came around to score on McCarthy's single, tying the game at 1-1.

Mansfield took a 3-1 lead in the third as McCarthy replaced starting pitcher Jordan Tavarez.  However, the Griffins tied the game in the bottom of the third as Del Haro drew a bases loaded walk to score Peyton Baldwin who was hit by a pitch.  Kayla Rolon and Anastasia Watson added singles to load the bases and set the table for Del Haro.  McCarthy then grounded into a fielder's choice as Rolon scored but Del Haro and Watson was retired on the base paths to end the inning.

After giving up three runs to the Mountaineers in the fourth, McCarthy was replaced and moved back into her designated player role as Gabriella Quinones took over in the circle.  Quinones pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless softball to finish the game.

The Griffins got their final run on Samantha Toro's bases loaded walk in the fifth inning.  Watson walked and Del Haro belted her second double of the game to lead off the inning.  Lucianna Boggi drew a one-out walk before Toro walked with two outs to plate Watson with the Griffins final run.

The women's softball team returns to action on Monday, February 27, 2023 when they host Millersville University at the CHC Softball Field.
