The Chestnut Hill college women's softball team produced a double-digit run effort for the first time this season, however their defense came apart late in the game as they committed seven errors on the afternoon allowing southern New Hampshire University to rally from a seven run deficit and defeat the Griffins 17-10.
The Griffins fall to 0-19 on the season while the Penmen improve to 7-9.
Skyler Cunningham and
Steph Tonuci each drove in three runs with Cunningham getting three hits in the game and Tonuci two.Â
Gabriella Quinones also had two of the Griffins' 11 hits on the day, including their only extra base hit, a one-out double in the third inning.
Quinones (0-6) also took the loss for CHC, allowing 12 runs (only three of which were earned) on 13 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Quinones also struck out one.Â
CHC's defense was good up to the sixth inning, having turned three double plays and committing two errors (only one of which led to a single run). The sixth inning saw five errors (four by the outfield) as SNHU erased a 7-4 deficit, sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring ten runs to take a 14-7 lead.
It was also an error, this time by the SNHU first baseman in the first inning that set the table for the Griffins' biggest inning of the young season, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to take a 7-0 lead.
Tonuci led off the game for CHC and was the recipient of the drooped throw by SNHU's first baseman, going to second on the play.Â
Peyton Baldwin walked and
Kayla Rolon singled to load the bases. Cunningham followed with a single to score the first Griffin run.
Abbie Alt-Ambriz earned an RBI on an infield fielder's choice in which all runners were safe while
Lucianna Boggi's groundout brought in a third run. Quinones singled to score Cunningham and three batters later Tonuci delivered a two-run single up the middle to make the score 6-0. A wild pitch brought home
Samantha Toro with the last run of the inning.
The Penmen chipped away at the lead, scoring once in the second inning, twice in the fourth and once more in the fifth before the floodgates opened in their half of the sixth inning. SNHU added three more runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 17-7 lead.
Chestnut scored their final three runs in their last at-bat. Tonuci drove in Toro with a two-out single and Baldwin followed with a single to put two runners on. Rolon reached on an error to load the bases before Cunningham drove in Tonuci and Baldwin with a single to center field for CHC's final two runs.
The two teams agreed to cancel the second game of their scheduled doubleheader due to the cold temperatures and high winds, making for a wind chill temperature in the 20 degree range.
The women's softball team will open conference play on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 when they host holy family university for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
