Conference games began for the Chestnut Hill College Softball team as they dropped both ends of the CACC-opening doubleheader to Holy Family University 8-0 and 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Chestnut Hill College Softball Field.
Gabriella Quinones had two hits in the second game while
Lucianna Boggi drove in CHC's only run after reaching on a fielder's choice in the second inning. In the field, second baseman
Peyton Baldwin recorded season highs with five putouts and four assists.
Jordan Tavarez (0-6) took the loss for the Griffins.
The Tigers pieced together three singles in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead with the Griffins tying the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Samantha Toro walked and Quinones singled to put two runners on with one out. Boggi then hit a hard grounder to shortstop and Toro subsequently scored on the play to tie the game at 1-1.
Holy Family pitcher Samantha Ciasullo helped help own cause with an RBI single in the fifth to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. HFU tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh to lead 4-1 and the Griffins went down in order in their final at-bat as Ciasullo and the Tigers (4-16, 2-0) earned the win.
Steph Tonuci's leadoff double in the fourth inning was Chestnut Hill's only hit as the Griffins fell 8-0 in five innings in the opener.
Abbie Alt-Ambriz (0-6) took the loss in game one. Makenna Patterson (1-7) earned the win for the Tigers
The Tigers scored three times in the first inning and added another run in third to lead 4-0 heading into the fifth inning. In the fifth inning, an RBI triple from Ciasullo started a four-run onslaught with the Tigers also taking advantage of an infield error to increase their lead to 8-0.
The Griffins went down in order in the fifth as the game ended via the eight-run mercy rule.
The women's softball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 when they travel to face Kutztown University for a nnon conference regional clash. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
