Griffins Baseball Swept by Nationally Ranked Marauders

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team had a short trip to the Lancaster area on Thursday as they faced nationally ranked Millersville University in a doubleheader at Cooper Park in Millersville, Pennsylvania.

The Marauders, ranked #16 in the most recent NCBWA Top 25 Media Poll, took game one 14-3 and completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in game two.  The Griffins fall to 0-6 with the two losses.  Millersville improves to 12-3.

Six different Griffins recorded singles in the opener while Ahmaad Goldson and David Antone had CHC's only extra base hits on the afternoon in game two.  Goldson hit a solo home run in the second inning and Antone a double in the seventh.  RJ Huth had the only other hit in the nightcap for the Griffins, a leadoff single in the fifth inning.  Huth also drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and stole a base in game two.

In the opener, Mike Kiefer (0-2) started and took the loss.  Kiefer went four innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits while striking out two.   Ben Wilchacky (3-1) started for Millersville, going six innings, giving up two runs and striking out seven to earn his third win of the season.

The Marauders had five hits in the opening frame to set the tone for the game, scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead.  Millersville scored once more in the second and twice in the fourth to hold a 7-2 lead before tacking on seven more runs in their final two at-bats.

The Griffins scored their first two runs in the fourth inning as  Goldson and Huth singled with Huth moving into scoring position via a wild pitch.  Ruben Pichardo followed with a single down the left field line scoring both Goldson and Huth to make the score 5-2 at the time.

After the Marauders exploded for six runs in the sixth, three courtesy of a three-run home run by Jimmy Losh, the Griffins added their final run, getting a pinch-hit single from Aiden Nesemeier through the right side to score Brendan Long who also delivered a pinch-hit single.  MU's Sam Morris hit a solo home run in the seventh to round out the scoring.

In the second game, Ben Bradt (0-1) made his Griffins debut on the mound and pitched four solid innings before fading in the fifth.  Bradt gave up five runs in 4.1 innings while striking out four to take the loss.  Garet Blankebiller (1-0)  earned the win for the Marauders, allowing just one run on two hits in five innings pitched.

Goldson led off the second inning with a home run, hitting a Blankenbiller pitch to the deepest part of the ballpark, in right center field to provide CHC with their only run of the game.

Millersville scored twice in the first inning, added three more in the fifth, all off Bradt.  Marlon Rose gave up one run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to round out the scoring.

The Griffins will face another Pennsylvania State Athletic conference (PSAC) team, Lock Haven University when they open a three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Bald Eagles.  The games will be played at the James J. Ramp Athletic Complex in Northeast Philadelphia.  First pitch of  Saturday's twinbill is set for 11 a.m.
