Eight different players drove in runs as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team won their first game of the season Monday afternoon, defeating Dominican University 12-1 in Orangeburg, New York.
Dominican came back and won game two, earning a 9-7 rain-shortened victory. The Griffins are now 1-22 on the season (1-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games) while Dominican is 4-18 overall and 1-5 in league games.
Senior
Peyton Baldwin hit her first Collegiate home run in game two and drove in two runs. In CHC's 9-7 loss.
Gabriella Quinones pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing just three hits and one run to earn her first collegiate win.Â
Skyler Cunningham and
Lucianna Boggi drove in two runs apiece.
The Griffins scored early and often in the opener with Cunningham driving in the Griffins' first two runs with a bases-loaded single up the middle. Baldwin then reached on an error which brought home another two runs. Two batters later, Boggi laced a triple to right field to score Baldwin and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Quinones, making the score 6-0.
Quinones gave up her only run, a home run to Kristin Miscia in the bottom half of the first.
Chestnut Hill plated five more runs in the top half of the second to take an 11-1 lead.  The Griffins loaded the bases with nobody out before
Abbie alt Ambriz drew a walk to score
Kayla Rolon who walked and stole second earlier in the inning. Boggi launched a sacrifice fly to centerfield to add another run to the CHC total and Quinones walked to again load the bases.Â
Maya Kemper then drew another bases-loaded walk to make the score 9-1 and two batters later
Samantha Toro and Rolon drew back-to-back two-out bases-loaded walks to give the Griffins an 11-1 lead.
Quinones doubled to lead off the fourth and later came around on
Steph Tonuci's sacrifice fly for the Griffins' final run in the 12-1 victory.
In the nightcap, a sacrifice fly by Tonuci, a wild pitch and Baldwin's home run staked the Griffins to a 3-0 lead. The Chargers got two back in the bottom of the second before the Griffins scored twice in the third to make the score 5-2. Rolon delivered an RBI double, and Baldwin had her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.
Madison Walker's three-run home run in the fourth put the Chargers ahead for the first time on the afternoon 6-5 in the bottom half of the third. Miscia added a three run home run in the fourth to add to the Chargers lead, 9-5. Â
The Griffins added two more in the top half of the fifth to close within two, 9-7 before the umpires decided to call the game due to poor weather conditions.
Jordan Tavarez took the loss for the Griffins.
The women's softball team returns to action on Wednesday March 28, 2023 for a conference doubleheader at Wilmington University First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
