Kayleina McGonigal bowled a career high 253 for Chestnut Hill College in the traditional portion of Sunday's morning's elimination match at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship helping the Griffins stave off elimination and defeat the Wildcats 2-0 to advance to the championship match.
The Griffins won the traditional match 908-907 and went on to cruise to 974-857 win in the Baker format match to earn the win and a place in the championship match against Caldwell University.
McGonigal bowled nine straight strikes to close out her match and finished with ten total strikes while filling nine of ten frames and the 253 score.Â
Eryn Moore filled eight of ten frames in the traditional match and bowled a 185.
Maddie Gannon bowled a 165 (eight filled frames) and
Hope Widmer a 156 (six frames filled).Â
Jess Hollabaugh bowled a 149 (six frames filled).
Scoring between the Wildcats and Griffins was close throughout and came down to the final ball thrown by the Wildcats. Wilmington trailed by nine and needed a strike to win the traditional match but the Wildcat anchor bowled knocked down just eight pins giving the Griffins a narrow win.
As has been the case in CHC's previous matches in the tournament, their opponent won the first game of their Baker match by at least 20 pins and this one was no different as the Wildcats held a 28 pin lead after the first game. The Griffins erased that deficit and then some in the second game, taking a 99-pin lead after two matches, 393-294 and increased their lead to 117 pins heading into the final match (802-685). Both teams bowled identical 172 score in the fifth game as the Griffins sealed their spot in the championship march with a 974-857 baker win.
Moore filled all ten frames in the match while Gannon filled nine. McGonigal and Hollabaugh filled eight frames apiece while Widmer filled six.
The championship match will take place at 1:30 p.m. as the Griffins go up against #4 seed Caldwell, who beat the Griffins 2-1 in Saturday's winners bracket match.
