Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader from Griffins

zhe Chestnut Hill College Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to area rival Wilmington University Wednesday afternoon at Asbury Field in New Castle, Delaware.  The Wildcats won the first game 8-0 and then completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in the second game.

The Griffins are now 1-24 on the season and 1-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Wilmington upped their record to 19-9 overall and 9-1 in league play.

Mianna Lopez Del Haro returned to action for the Griffins and had a pair of hits in the second game, including an RBI double in the first inning, plating the Griffins only run.  Steph Tonuci and Jazmine Ramirez also had hits for the Griffins.

Abbie Alt-Ambriz took the loss in game two, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing all nine runs (five earned) on 12 hits while striking out one and not walking a batter.

Tonuci singled and stole second and came around to score on Lopez Del Haro's double to left field, giving the Griffins an early 1-0 lead.  The Wildcats got half of their hits for the game in the bottom half of the first, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four times to take a 4-1 lead.

Wilmington added a run in the second and two more in the third to go out in front 7-1 before scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the eight-run rule.

Renamarie Rocha earned the win for the Wildcats, striking out five over six innings of work while allowing one run on four hits.

In the opener, Gabriella Quinones pitched a complete game and had one of the Griffins' two hits as the Wildcats pulled away early and defeated the Griffins 8-0 in five innings.  Quinones allowed 10 hits in Wilmington's first two at-bats with the Wildcats jumping out to a 7-0 lead, but settled down to give up just three more in the final three innings.  Quinones walked two and struck out one.

Quinones led off the top half of the third with a single and the Griffins loaded the bases via walks to Lopez Del Haro and Erika Kwasek with nobody out before Wildcat pitcher Brooke Koehler retired the next three batters, the last two on strikeouts to end the Griffins' threat.

Skyler Cunningham had the only other hit for the Griffins, a leadoff single to start the fourth inning.  Wilmington scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead.  Chestnut Hill went down in order in the top half of the fifth to end the game.

The women's softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 1, 2023 when they host the University of Bridgeport at the CHC softball field.  First pitch is set for noon, depending upon weather conditions
