Softball Team Splits Home Doubleheader with Bridgeport

Gabriella Quinones recorded a career high seven strikeouts and allowed just one run in a complete game effort as the Chestnut Hill college softball team defeated the University of Bridgeport 7-1 in the opening game of the Central Atlantic collegiate conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the CHC Softball Field.

The Purple Knights rallied with a four run seventh inning in game two to salvage split with the Griffins with a 6-4 win.  With the split the Griffins are now 2-6 in CACC games and 2-25 overall.  The Purple knights are now 6-2 in league play and 16-13 overall.

Kayla Rolon and Samantha Toro had three hits apiece and combined to drive in five of the Griffins seven runs. Steph Tonuci and Jazmine Ramirez each had a pair of singles.  Quinones and Ramirez had the Griffins remaining RBI in the first game.

Trailing 1-0, Quinones drove in the Griffins' first run on an infield groundout and Ramirez drove in Skyler Cunningham with the Griffins second run. Rolon added an RBI double in the third to increase CHC's lead to 3-1.

Quinones pitched her way out of a bases-loaded with nobody out jam, striking out two of the last three batters to keep the Purple Knights off the scoreboard.  Rolon added her second double of the game in the fifth to score Toro and Tonuci, increasing the Griffins' lead to 5-1.  Toro drove in the final two runs with a two out single in the sixth.

Bridgeport threatened again in their final at-bat loading the bases with one out.  Quinones, however, shut the door inducing two fly ball outs to end the game.  Quinone improved to 2-6 with the win.

Chestnut Hill led 4-2 in game two when the Purple Knights produced four runs in their final at-bat to win the game 6-4.   Quinones, now playing first base, drove in two of the Griffins' four runs with a double.  Tonuci also had a double in the game.

Abby Alt-Ambriz (0-7) took the loss after coming into the game in relief of Jordan Tavarez who pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed the first two UB runs.

Rolon got the Griffins on the board, scoring on a wild play from first base following a wild pitch and an error in the second inning.  Quinones and Tonuci followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to stake the Griffins to a 4-1 lead.

Bridgeport chipped away with a run in the fifth before their big inning in the final at-bat.  Samantha Schiebe retired the Griffins in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win for the Purple Knights.

The women's softball team returns to action on Monday, April 3, 2023, with a non-conference regional doubleheader against the college of Staten Island.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
