It was a great day to play two at Hostelley Field Friday afternoon as the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Alliance University, winning the opener 16-3 and following that with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
The Griffins extended their winning streak to four games, their longest since late in the 2019 season. Chestnut Hill is now 10-14 overall and 4-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Alliance is now 1-26 and 0-8 in league play. The sweep also gave the Griffins a season sweep of Alliance and gave Head Coach
Robert Spratt his 400
th career win. Â
Coach Spratt has directed the Chestnut Hill College baseball program since its inaugural season of 2008 and is in his 16
th season at Chestnut Hill. Prior to becoming the Griffins' head baseball coach, he spent eight seasons as the head coach at Penn State-Abington where he won 105 games. He currently has 295 wins as the Griffin's head coach.
Jake Schweiker allowed just one hit in five innings of work in the opener, an RBI single in the second inning. Schweiker struck out five Alliance batters in the winning effort and improved to 2-1 on the season.
Mike Kiefer followed Schweiker's solid effort with a complete game in the nightcap, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Offensively,
Zach Ahmed extended his hitting streak to nine games, with two hits in the opener and another in the nightcap. Ahmed also was dominant on the basepaths, with five stolen bases in the two games.
Justin Geiger had three hits in the opener and added another in the nightcap.Â
Greg Sylvester returned to the line and had three hits in five at -bats in the two games and was hit by a pitch in each game. Sylvester had three RBI in the opener.Â
Nate O'Donnell had four RBI in the opener, two from a single in the fourth inning, another via a base loaded walk and one off an infield groundout.
In the opener, the Griffins scored in every inning jumping out to a 6-1 lead after three innings and exploding for five more runs in the fourth to take an 11-1 lead. Ahmed doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on Geiger's single. Geiger stole second and
Andrew Sawarynski brought them both home with a long single to center field. Two walks then loaded the bases for Sylvester who brought home Sawarynski via a fielder's choice.  A double steal by
RJ Huth and Sylvester set the table for O'Donnell who brought both teammates home with a single through the left side.
Geiger added an RBI double in the fifth inning, followed by a triple by
Brendan Long. Long scored on a single by
Greg Ianelli and Sylvester capped off the inning with a hard hit RBI infield single. A wild pitch in the sixth inning plated the Griffins' final run.
In game two, Ahmed singled and stole second and third followed by a Geiger walk and a Geiger steal of second.Â
Ahmaad Goldson then hit a ground-rule double to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the first inning.Â
David Antone replaced Goldson at second with an RBI double to stake the Griffins to a 3-0 lead.
Geiger drove in two more runs with a single in the second inning to make the score 5-0 before Alliance got on the board with a run in the third inning.  O'Donnell drove in the Griffins sixth run and moved to third on a throwing error. O'Donnell then scored on a straight steal of home to a 7-1 Griffins lead.
Alliance loaded the bases with nobody out in their final at-bat, but the Griffins' defense turned a crucial double play before AU's Darnell Guerrero hit a two-run home run to close the gap to 7-4. Kiefer then got Fausto Leonardo to ground out to end the game.
The baseball team returns to action on Sunday, April 2, 2023, when they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a division crossover doubleheader.
