In the first doubleheader of their spring trip south, the Chestnut Hill College Women's Softball team faced a strong team from Francis Marion University falling to the Patriots 5-0 in the opening game and 9-0 in game two.
The Griffins are now 0-6 to start the season while the Patriots improve to 18-2.
In the opener,
Jordan Tavarez gave up five runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings to take the loss. Tavarez allowed four hits and struck out three.
Gabriella Quinones closed out the game with 3.2 innings of scoreless softball, allowing four hits and striking out one.
Jenna Walling earned the win for Francis Marion, allowing four hits while striking out ten in a complete game effort.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Griffins put two runners on base after
Samantha Toro walked and
Steph Tonuci singled.
Peyton Baldwin moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt but were stranded as the Patriots forced an infield groundout to end the inning.
Chestnut Hill again put two runners on base in the fifth inning.
Lucianna Boggi singled to leadoff the frame and moved to second on Toro's infield hit. Tonuci reached on fielder's choice and stole second to put both runners in scoring position but the Patriots again got the final out without allowing the Griffins to score and led 5-0 heading into the final two innings.
The Griffins went down in order in their final two at-bats to end the game.
In game two, FMU's Lauren Smallwood hit a walkoff three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap a 9-0 five inning win via the eight-run rule.
Abbie Alt-Ambriz took the loss, allowing nine hits and all nine runs.
Rachel Davis tossed a five inning no-hitter for the Patriots, striking out five and allowing just one baserunner, a second inning leadoff walk to
Anastasia Watson.
The women's softball team will face Rollins College on Monday, March 6, 2023 for their second doubleheader of their spring trip. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
