Nationally ranked Saint Leo university swept a doubleheader from the Chestnut Hill College Women's softball team Tuesday evening in Saint Leo, Florida, defeating the Griffins 10-0 in the opening game and 4-0 in the nightcap.
The Griffins drop to 0-10 on the season while the Lions, ranked 22
nd in the latest NFCA Division II poll, improved to 20-3 on the season.
Chestnut Hill had just two baserunners in the opener as Saint Leo pitchers Hailey Thomas and Tierney Hocquard combined for a five inning no hitter in the 10-0 win for the Lions
In game two, the Griffins had three hits, including one for extra bases as the Lions completed the sweep with a 4-0 win.
Gabriella Quinones (0-2) started the second game, pitching four innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits to take the loss.
Abbie Alt-Ambriz closed out the game allowing just one run on two hits.
The Lions got a solo run in the second and added two more runs following a Griffin error in the third to lead 3-0.
Kayla Rolon got the Griffins' first hit of the series, banging a double to centerfield in the top of the fourth with one out. Rolon, however, was unable to score.
The Griffins did not have another baserunner until the sixth inning when
Erika Kwasek drew a leadoff walk. Three batters later,
Peyton Baldwin recorded an infield single with two outs to put two runners. Both runners were stranded as the Griffins failed to advance the runners any further in the inning.
Skyler Cunningham had the Griffins' final hit, a two-out single in the seventh inning. The game ended when CHC's next batter grounded out to end the game with the Lions winning 4-0.
In the opener,
Erin McCarthy picked up the loss, pitching a four inning complete game, giving up all ten runs (seven earned) on 13 hits.
CHC did not get a baserunner until the third inning when
Macey Matlock was hit by a pitch.
Jazmine Ramirez drew a walk in the seventh inning and was the Griffin's only other player to reach base as Chestnut Hill was no-hit for the third time this season.
The competition gets tougher for the Griffins on Wednesday as they face the #3 team in the country, University of Tampa for an afternoon twinbill in Tampa, Florida.
