Griffins Split with Chargers

Ahmaad Goldson hit a bases loaded triple in eighth inning of the opening game of the Chestnut Hill college baseball team's doubleheader at Dominican University on Wednesday as the Griffins defeated the Charger 12-6 in extra innings.  The Chargers went on to win game two 9-7 to salvage a split of the two-game series.

The Griffins are now 13-19 with the split and 7-6 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games.  Dominican is now 5-26 overall and 2-9 in league play.

Goldson's three-run triple started a six-run explosion in the extra frame making CHC reliever Marlon Rose the winning pitcher.  Rose pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Nate O'Donnell also had three RBI's in the opener with a double and a single while Richard Joa, making his Griffins debut as a late inning defensive replacement, banged out a single in the extra frame to plate the final two runs.

With the game tied at 6-6, the Griffins loaded the bases via a walk sandwiched between two hit batters before Goldson delivered the big blow.   Greg Ianelli then became the third Griffin to get hit with a pitch in the inning and then stole second before RJ Huth singled to score Goldson.  Greg Sylvester dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position with one out before Joa hit a single to score them both.  Two batters later Zach Ahmed became the fourth Griffin to get hit with a pitch in the inning.

Rose gave up a two-out single in the bottom of the eight before getting an infield groundout to end the game.

The Griffins had trailed 6-3 heading into the sixth inning when O'Donnell brought his team within one, 6-5, with a one out single.  One inning later Iannelli entered the game as a pinch runner and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Griffin batters were hit by a pitch seven times in the game, equaling the school record set last season against Florida Memorial University

Dominican broke a 3-3 tied in the third inning of game two, plating five runs to take a commanding 8-3 lead.  John Crane's infield groundout in the 4th made the score 8-4 but the chargers got the run right back in the fifth with a solo home run.  An RBI single by Goldson and a DU infield error brought home two more runs to close the deficit to 9-6 in the fifth.    Crane then hit his first home run as a Griffin in the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Crane had three RBI in the game while Huth had two of the Griffins' six hits.  Kade Breisblatt took the loss allowed eight runs (five earned) in three innings of work.

The Griffins return to action on Friday, April 14, 2023 when they travel to face area rival Jefferson for a conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
