The Chestnut Hill Men's tennis team played their final non-conference regular season match of the 2022-23 season Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Sparkill, New York to face a ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas college team. The Spartans went on to defeat the Griffins 5-2.
The Griffins fall to 12-8 on the season while STAC, ranked #49 in the latest ITA national rankings, improves to 15-1 on the season.
The Spartans opened the match by winning two of the three doubles contests to secure the doubles point. CHC's #3 doubles team of
Joao Sousa and
Tiago Lima were the only doubles team to end their match victorious, winning 6-4 over Tony Khamassi and Ondrej Sramak.
In singles competition, STAC secured straight set wins at #2 and #3 singles to open up a 3-0 lead before
Antonio Franquis cut the deficit to 3-1 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Sramak at #4 singles.
Noah Cutting brought the Griffins within one with a thrilling three set win over Odysseas Papaioannau at #1 singles 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Sousa's #5 singles match also went three sets as Don vinz Lominoque won the final two sets to take the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to secure STAC's fourth point and clinch the match.
STAC added their fifth and final point with a three set win at #6 singles.
The Griffins will play their final regular season contest on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Dominican University. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
