Sawarynski's Walkoff Single Salvages Split for Griffins

Andrew Sawarynski's pinch hit single in the seventh inning lifted the Chestnut Hill college Baseball team to an 11-10 walkoff win over Bloomfield College Sunday afternoon, salvaging a split of the two game conference series at Hostelley field in North Wales, Pa.

With the split, the Griffins are now 14-22 overall and 8-9 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games.  The Bears fall to 13-23 overall and 8-6 in league play.

The Sawarynski game winner was set up by a seventh inning rally from the Bears in the top half of the inning which saw the Griffins bullpen implode and give up nine runs after staking starter Ben Bradt to a 10-1 lead.  Bradt was solid through six innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven batters.

Bloomfield banged out eight hits in the inning including a three run home run by Tyree Bradley and a two run home run from Elian Guzman, the latter tying the game.  After the next Bears' batter reached on a single, Kade Breisblatt entered the game and got Elvis Lopez to ground out to third base to end the inning.

In the bottom half the Griffins first two batters were retired quickly.  Down to their final out, Greg Sylvester worked the count from new BC pitcher Sleiter Suriel until he was hit by a pitch.  It marked the 11th time this season he had been hit with a pitch, most on the team and second most in the conference.  Nate O'Donnell followed with single as Sylvester advanced to third and was ready to come home when the throw got away from the Bears' third baseman but was held by Head Coach Bob Spratt with O'Donnell advancing into second.  Sawarynski came in to pinch hit for Shawn Levan and hit a high bouncer that went in between the third baseman and shortstop into left field as Sylvester came home with the winning run.

Chestnut Hill had a big inning of their own earlier in the game as they scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead.  David Antone got the offense going with a two run home run, his fourth of the season.  Sylvester scored on a throwing error by the catcher and Justin Geiger walked with the bases loaded, making the score 5-1.  Ruben Pichardo then delivered a long single to centerfield as the bases cleared and Pichardo pulled into second on an error.

Sylvester added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and Zach Ahmed had an rbi single in the sixth, giving the Griffins a 10-1 lead that they would cough up in the final inning, setting the stage for Sawarynski's heroics.

Breisblatt (1-4) earned his first win of the season with the relief outing.

In the opener, Bloomfield had just three hits, but all three went for extra bases as the Bears held off a seventh inning rally to earn a 5-4 win.

Brendan Long (2-4) took the loss, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on three extra base hits. The big blow was a three-run home run from Lopez in the third inning.

All four of the Griffins' runs came via the long ball with  Geiger hitting a two-run shot in the third inning, his third of the season, pulling the Griffins within one 3-2 and Antone hit his third home run of the season in the seventh, closing the gap to 5-4.  Geiger also had a two-out double in the first inning.

Antone's blast came with one out in the seventh as the Griffins attempted to rally from a 5-2 deficit.  CHC's next two batters after Antone struck out and flied out to end the game.

The Griffins return to action for a single non-conference game on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, when the host Kutztown University.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
