Griffins' Softball Team Earns Sweep over Alliance

Nine different players on the Chestnut Hill College women's softball team recorded at least one hit as they swept a doubleheader from alliance university 9-1 and 6-3 late Saturday afternoon in Staten Island, New York.

The Griffins improve to 8-35 overall with the sweep and are now 5-15 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games.  Alliance is now 5-35 overall.

All nine starters got a hit in the opening game as Gabriella Quinones won her fourth game of the season, pitching five innings and allowing one unearned run while striking out three and giving up just three hits.

Steph Tonuci, Skyler Cunningham and Lucianna Boggi each drove in two runs while Maya Kemper and Samantha Toro along with Tonuci and Cunningham had two hits apiece in the opener.

Toro doubled to lead off the first game and later scored on Tonuci's single.  Alliance evened the score, scoring on an infield error in the bottom of the first.

Quinones had an RBI single in the second and Cunningham added one in the third.  Peyton Baldwin followed with an infield groundout to score the fourth Griffins' run and Boggi had a two-out two-rbi single to boost the Griffins lead to 6-1.

Chestnut Hill scored three more times in the fourth as Tonuci drove home Kemper with a sacrifice fly, Cunningham added a single to score Toro and Mianna Lopez Del Haro scored on a wild pitch.

Now leading 9-1, Quinones and the Griffins shut the door in the bottom half of the fifth inning as the freshman pitcher induced a game ending double play to give the Griffins the win via the eight-run mercy rule.

In game two, Baldwin and Lopez del Haro delivered doubles in the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 Alliance lead en route to a 6-3 win to complete the sweep.

Lopez del Haro's double scored three runs while Baldwin, who reached base in all four plate appearances (three walks and the double) had one RBI.  Tonuci and Jazmine Ramirez drove in the other two runs.

Abbie Alt-Ambriz picked up the win, striking out five while tossing a complete game, allowing 12 hits and three runs.

Kayla Rolon reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth before Baldwin doubled to bring her home to tie the game at 1-1.  Tonuci later drew a two-out bases loaded walk to score Baldwin with the go-ahead run.  Lopez del Haro followed with the bases clearing double into right field to give the Griffins a 5-1 lead.

Alliance got one run back in the bottom of the sixth while Ramirez had a sacrifice fly to score Cunningham.  Alliance again threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run before Alt-Ambriz induced a fly ball out to end the game.

The softball team returns to action on Monday, April 24, 2023, when they host Georgian Court University at the CHC softball field.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
