David Antone's 11
th inning single brought home the winning run as the Chestnut Hill College baseball team outlasted Goldey-Beacom College 10-8 in the opening game of their three game conference series Tuesday afternoon in Hockessin, Delaware.
The Griffins improve to 10-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 16-25 overall. The Lightning fall to 13-7 in league play and 28-15 overall.
Antone's hit made a winner out of Griffins' relief pitcher
Marlon Rose. Rose earned his sixth win of the season, tied for the most among CACC pitchers. Rose entered a tied game in the ninth inning, gave a single and an intentional walk before getting out of the inning unscathed and pitched a perfect tenth inning to earn the win.Â
Colby Seelig came in for the 11
th inning and retired the Lightning in order to earn his first collegiate save.
With the game tied at 8-8 heading into the 11
th inning,
Eli Meredith reached on a one-out single and two batters later
Justin Geiger reached on a fielding error as Meredith reached second. Antone then hit a single down the right field line as the speedy Meredith came around to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run.Â
Zach Ahmed added an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle to score Geiger.
RJ Huth sent the game into extras with his solo home run to left field as the Griffins came back from an 8-4 deficit following a disastrous fourth inning that saw the Lightning put eight runs up on the board, erasing an early 4-0 lead. Half of that lead was produced by Antone, whose two-run home run capped a three-run third inning and gave CHC their four-run lead.
The Griffins chipped away at the lead slowly, adding a run in the fifth as Huth scored on a wild pitch and two more in the sixth on
Greg Sylvester's RBI double and Meredith's sacrifice fly, pulling Chestnut Hill within one 8-7
Brandon Long held the Lightning in check for the middle innings after entering the game in relief of starter
Ben Bradt in the fourth, but got into trouble in the eighth putting two runners on with just one out.
Kade Breisblatt came in and after issuing a two-out walk to load the bases induced a fly ball out for the third out, as the Lightning left the bases full and Griffins headed into the ninth inning trialing by one 8-7, before Huth hit the game tying home run.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team will conclude their three-game series with Goldey-Beacom on Saturday with a doubleheader at Hostelley Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 noon, weather permitting.
