Nine different players scored as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team closed out their regular season with a 14-3 win over Caldwell university at Essex Valley field in West Caldwell Friday afternoon.
The Griffins finish the regular season with a 5-2 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games and will be the #2 seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament based on conference tiebreaker protocols. Chestnut Hill is 9-4 overall. Caldwell finishes their season at 2-10 overall and 1-6 in league play.
Sam Slater led the Griffins with four goals while
Jason Jenkins and
Zach Jastrzebski had two apiece. Slater also had two assists to finish with six points.
Jack Clyne had a goal and two assists for three points while
Will Duddy, Noah Hammon and
Brendan Lang added a goal and an assist apiece.
On the defensive end,
Zach Schultz led the team with seven ground balls, winning 11 of 16 faceoffs.Â
Chase Snyder had five ground balls while
Dan Grubb chipped in four. Grubb and
Riley Harker had three cause turnovers apiece.Â
Austin Jones made 12 saves in net for Chestnut Hill to earn the 30
th win of his career, the most in program history.
The two teams exchanged goals in the first two minutes of play with Slater putting the Griffins on the board at the 13:34 mark with an assist from Clyne. Caldwell quickly tied the score 32 seconds later.Â
Tommy Austin then started a string of ten straight goals for the Griffins as they built an 11-1 lead into the third period. Slater, Jastrzebski and Jenkins had two goals apiece during the 36 minute stretch.
Jastrzebski scored the only two goals of the second quarter as the Griffins expanded their lead to 6-1 and had five straight goals in the third quarter including a man-up score from Slater before the cougars broke the string with a goal with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.
Caldwell scored their final goal at the 12:14 mark of the fourth quarter, making the score 11-3. Slater tallied his fourth goal of the game five minutes later and Lang and
Jake Homan added CHC's final two scores of the game with Slater assisting on Lang's goal at the 6:25 mark and Homan getting an unassisted goal with 4:23 remaining.
The Men's Lacrosse team will play in the CACC Semi-finals as the #2 seed against #3 Wilmington on Friday May 5, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. Post University is serving as the host for this year's championship. Â
