Griffins Fall to Rams in Bill Giles Invitational Semi Final

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team played in a Bill Giles Invitational Tournament game for the first time in the program history on Wednesday, facing area division II rival West Chester University at Serpico Stadium in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  Both teams played hard but when the final out was made, West Chester was triumphant with a 2-0 victory.

The Bill Giles Invitational was introduced in 2001 and is an area College Division II baseball tournament with four Philadelphia area baseball teams. Taking part in the tournament are West Chester University, Jefferson University (formerly Philadelphia University) and Wilmington University and for the first time in 2023, Chestnut Hill College.  Two semi-final games are played among the four teams with the winners earning a chance to play for the Bill Giles Invitational Championship at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Chestnut Hill drops to 11-16 overall with the loss while West Chester improves to 19-8.  The golden Rams will play Jefferson University – the winner of the other semi-final contest at Citizens Bank Park on April 18.

Kade Breisblatt (0-3) started and pitched four innings, taking the loss, allowing two hits and striking out three.  Colby Seelig and Marlon Rose pitched the final four innings.  The three Griffin pitchers allowed only three hits in the game.

Two hit batters by Breisblatt and a double produced the Golden Rams first run in the third inning.  West Chester added their final run in the fourth when Breisblatt hit his fourth batter of the game and then gave up a double, putting two runners in scoring position.  A sacrifice fly by WCU gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.

The Griffins had their best opportunity to score in the fifth when Greg Sylvester and Nate O'Donnell recorded back-to-back singles with two outs but were stranded on the base paths. CHC also had a two-out triple from Ahmaad Goldson earlier in the second inning, but he was picked off the base to end the inning and the threat.

Chestnut Hill had six hits for the game, all in the first five innings.  O'Donnell had two of those hits.

WCU's Ryan DeHaven earned the win (3-2).  Five West Chester relievers held the Griffins hitless and just one baserunner, a seventh inning walk to Goldson.

The Griffins' baseball team returns to action on Friday April 7 with a pair of conference games at Wilmington University.  First pitch is set for noon.
