Griffins Defeat Bears in Conference Opener, 3-2

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team opened conference play with a win Saturday afternoon, defeating Bloomfield college 3-2 at victory field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the win.  The Bears fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Chestnut Hill jumped out ot a 3-0 lead by the 63rd minute before the Bears mounted a comeback effort with two goals in a five minute span to close the gap to 3-2 where it would remain for the final 20 minutes of play.

Antonia Linus opened the scoring with her second goal of the season, taking a pass from Rachel Apsley and putting it past the Bloomfield 'keeper just 1:48 into the game.  Natalie Belz came off the bench and produced her first collegiate goal at the 31:32 mark after receiving the pass from Elisabeth Stokes.

The Griffins finished the half outshooting the Bears 15-1 (7-1 on goal) and produced a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.   They continued to push the play with eight more shots in the first 17 minutes of the second half before the Bears committed a foul inside the box and the Griffins were awarded a penalty kick.  Riley Regan was successful on the kick and the Griffins had a 3-0 advantage in the 63rd minute.

The Bears came charging back, forcing play in their offensive end and eventually scored two goals, the second a long wind aided shot that got by CHC goalkeeper Sophia Andreoli.

For the game, the Griffins outshot the Bears 33-6 with 16 shots on goal to BC's five.  Chestnut Hill had nine corner kicks while not allowing any for the Bears.

Starting goalkeeper Ellie Stratz picked up the win as the Griffins took the lead with her in the net and never relinquished it.  Stratz had one save while Andreoli, who entered the game in the second half had two.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team will host Daemen University on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Victory Field.
